Is it possible to tune in local HD channels just using basic cable.  I have a HD box in my living room but just want to hook up the coax connection straight to my TV in my bedroom.

It depends on your provider and market.

In Milwaukee I can connect Time Warner's coax directly to the TV, set the tuner to CATV, and scan.  The TV will pick up the locals that Time Warner carries in Clear QAM.

Notes:

They occasionally change the RF channels assigned, so if a channel disappears, try a re-scan.  They do not notify you when they change.

Some systems do not give you the same virtual channels you would get over the air.  So for example channel 4-1 might show up on channel 111-8.

Last time I had basic, Time Warner was not providing any program titles or info with Clear QAM locals.
