I may have missed a announcement here, but for the last several days WTMJ local originated news etc have changed to letterbox format.
Why has this happened?
Different equipment  or what.
Really distracting as all of the other local stations are not showing the black bars on top and bottom of the screen.

Are you watching the news on an HD TV, on your HD channel 4 station, and with the proper HD hookup?  (HD TV, HD channel selected, HD receiver or box, and either HDMI or Component Cables?)

If the answer is yes, and you are seeing the black bars, you might want to check your equipment settings.

If you are watching the WTMJ channel 4 on an SD TV, best guess is that WTMU is now broadcasting their entire signal in HD, and you would need an HD set with the proper hookup,  (HD TV, HD channel selected, HD receiver or box, and either HDMI or Component Cables) to get rid of the black bars.

Other services like Fox News, went to a native HD format a few years ago, which means black bars unless you have an HD set and proper hookup.

Which provider do you have? I know on DirecTV that they use the AFD #10 flag which forces 4:3 sets to display a 16:9 letterboxed picture for 4, so your provider may now be rendering the screen in that format at WTMJ's request. WITI does the same thing with their primetime at the request of Fox (while WLUK in Green Bay flags all their their HD programming and news in widescreen on analog sets). Remember we did go through this two years back when Fox began all-widescreen programming for analog sets when football season began.

No provider here, just a OTA roof antenna.
No HD just the converter box on top of the set.
This just started last week, but adjusting the menu for Cropped instead of going with what the station sent out, seems to have resolved the problem.
