I have one more follow up question regarding streaming Netflix.  I heard recently from someone that if you stream netflix on the nintendo Wii, that eventually it will wear the Wii down, which assuming that is true that would wear down anything, your Tivo, PS3, laptop, Ipod, etc?  Is that true or as Loadstar said recently about that TWC rep, he is so full of crap that his eyes are turning brown?

I know people who remodeled their whole kitchen, very nice job, and then built a "summer" kitchen in their basement with the old stuff!  They used the brand-new upstairs oven & dishwasher as storage spaces.  So those should be in great shape when they sell the place.

Maybe your friend is doing something similar with a couple of Wiis.  ;)

The only thing Netflix streaming will wear down is your eyes and ears with its shittastic audio/picture quality.

It is impressive how they can lower the bar even more than U.S. so-called "HDTV" channels.

They might've been referring to the fact that it used to be a disc-only option, which then yes, it might be true it would wear out the disc mechanism. But if I remember when I used the PS3 disc it only read it for a few seconds in order to speed past the former XBOX 360 contractual obligation, enough to grab the Netflix interface and that's it.

Now that the Wii and PS3 now have dedicated apps though, there isn't a risk of weardown beyond the usual maintenance of a game console. Certainly it'll save a few cents on your energy bill since you're not spinning the optical drive.

Ok that makes sense regarding using a disc or not.  And like any electronic device eventually they will wear down, I just thought that sounded silly that by streaming netflix it can wear it down.  The one electronic thing of mine that never lasts is my printers.  I seem to buy a new one about every 5 years.

Ditto ... but even with the Netflix disc, since game discs are the normal mode, that would be a pretty minor consideration if there was any amount of game-playing going on.

(Regarding printers ... you might check into used office-grade models.  My HP LaserJet 4M has printed over 67,000 pages since 1994.  I put in a new fuser about four years ago.  It's networked and works with everything from Macintosh System 6 and DOS to OS X and Windows 7.  A 5,000-page toner cartridge costs me maybe $20-30.

With complicated graphics and color-relevant stuff however I usually use my $60 ink jet MFC.  I use the ink jet so little I am now printing everything on it to use up the ink that I got with the printer 20 months ago.)
