I read in some forums that Directv is now started to add the multiroom view to the new software update.

see here

Im kinda new to Directv.  How does my box get updated?  Can I reset something to initiate the update?  Or does direct automatically PUSH the update.

You will receive the update when its your turn. It starts out west and we are usually the last to get it.

Software updates are rolled across the country by D*. I'm not sure there's a pattern or not, many will say it goes West to East. The last major software update sort of jumped around the country at first.

You CANNOT force the update. Your box needs an authorization from D* first. If you force it you just download the current software.

D* sends an authorization signal to your STB and then it downloads the update and installs it.

9 times out of 10 this happens in the middle of the night when viewing numbers are the lowest.

You may notice that the next morning the blue ring on your receiver will be pulsing. This means the box has been updated. Also when you initiate the first channel change or whatever, a banner will pop up telling you your software has been updated.

I do participate in the CE (Cutting Edge) (Beta software) program occasionally, but not lately.

At one time I was testing an early beta of MRV but at the time it was extremely buggy. I'm just patiently waiting for the update.

Most likely in the week or so.

Notice they will be charging for multi-room viewing, although it is free for beta testing.

In addition, for beta testing you use ethernet, but they will likely can that idea and use DECA (ethernet over coax) only when fully released.  You'll also need at least HR21/H21 or later recievers.  So to go multiroom will probably cost something like $10/month extra, plus a bunch of upgrade fees for your dish (you must have SWM) and any old boxes.  And you'll likely be back under a new 2 year contract.  I think I'll be avoiding this for now.  They keep raising my rates every year, and I keep cutting services to keep up.

Ron, I'm not sure where you got that $10.00 fee figure from.

From what I'm hearing, the fee may be less than $5 a month.

My understanding is MRV will work just fine without DECA

I for one don't plan on changing my network set up at all. Once the software update is here I'm opting in.

Now I think there (directv) just messing with me. I got up this mourning, turn on the main setup, bang blue lights (woooo). Run up to setup the other dvr, and it didn't get update. wtf. guess i'll have a little longer to wait, damn.

My DVR got the upgrade and I opt'd in. Will have to try it over the next day.

I liked the functionality Beta's and missed it when it was gone. Not sure about
paying for it though, we'll have to see HOW much I like it:)

I have one DVR that was upgraded with the multiroom..... I went into my other room which has just a HD box  (no DVR) with ethernet.. and it doesn't have the multiroom option on the menu?

I thoght I would be able to access my DVR list from hy HD box that has no DVR....
Is this not true?

Not until it gets the download that enables it (I'm in the same situation). Sounds like
it will be a couple of weeks.

But, My main box is updated and has the multiroom option..
My other regualry HD21  box (no DVR) doesn't have the multiroom option.

Wouldn't both of them been upgraded at the same time?

Do you mean the H21 (that's the one with no DVR)?

Every version (HR20, HR21, H20, H21, etc) gets a different download and no, they
don't always come at the same time. The DVR's seem to get updates much more
often than the non-DVR's.

To make sure, you need version 0x4395 on a H21 or H23.

I forced a download on my H21 today and still got an older version (434d)

This explains it too.

Like said above it may take a couple of weeks to get all of their STB's upgraded.

They have a very narrow window during the night to send the updates and generally will do the DVR's separate from standard STB's.

Two different software packages. Can you imagine the problems they would have trying to push two different versions of software at the same time?

They also tend to start the upgrades slowly to see if there any problems reported with the download and implementation of the update.

Yes, they are tested before they release updates nationally but, in a national release I would imagine anything could happen. (and has!)

I have the update on all my boxes and have actually  been using the MRV...here is my take on it.

I have all my DVR's wired (thought if I am going to run coax to each one I might as well run CAT5 also.)

In my living room I have my HR20-700 DVR, my TV, (Panasonic G10) and blu-ray player  networked so I had a hub in the living room to order to get all these on my network. I have our bedroom DVR (R22-200) on the network as well as our rec room DVR (HR20-700). I got the MRV up and running pretty straight forward, except that I was running into drop-outs and glitches when 'pulling' programs between my living room and any of the other  DVR's.  I replaced my hub with an older Linksys router that I turned into a switch, and have had no problems with drops and glitches since. I do think my hub was bottlenecking the network.   Also should mention that I have a Netgear WPN842 router.  Last night I sat in the bedroom and pulled HD programing off the living room DVR and had no issues at all...I could fast forward, rewind, and 30 sec skip with no problems.

I have not even played around with the rec room DVR yet other than to set it up and name it but I do see it on the networked DVR list.

It is pretty cool but I will NOT be paying for it when Directv decides to charge for it.

Haven't got the update yet on my HR22.  I'm in no rush though since I don't have any other receivers, though the extra guide information will be nice.  Do they push the updates if your receiver is on overnight?  I think I've heard that it will ask you, but I don't know if it automatically does it if you don't answer.  Mine usually stays on all night because it doesn't have a sleep timer...
