I have noticed that the Early show Mon through Sat used to be in standard def.  They do the local scrolling news on the bottom of the screen.  Since CBS 58 does not broadcast in HD I figured that since they do the local scrolling news bar, that is why the Early show is not in HD.  A few weeks ago the Early Show I noticed is now in HD.  However CBS 58 still is not.  Wouldn't CBS be close to HD if they can at least do the local scroll bar in HD now.  My friend explained to me prior to Fox 6 and TMJ4 going HD that when they do news flashes as well as weather alerts that they are forced to downgrade to Standard def.

The HD crawl is generated out of a box in master control, called the LIDIA, which is also responsible for displaying the CBS eye bug and hourly IDs.

Last I saw, everything else related to the news operation (except their field cameras) is in SD. Occasionally they'll show part of the control room for a story or Eye to Eye, and you can see their ancient switcher.

An easy way to see if they ever get HD studio cameras or an HD switcher would be to see if the green or blue glow around people when they're in front of a chroma wall were to disappear...

Also, even though the LIDIA product page mentions EAS alerts, these don't include maps, so I'd imagine they'll continue to downconvert to SD for severe WX squeezes.

Furthermore, the Early Show didn't start broadcasting in HD (anywhere) until April 26th.

Hope this explains everything!
