Looks like FOX6 will be the next station to go HD news according to Tim Cuprisin's OnMedia Blog.  They say they will go HD news "by the end of the year." If WISN doesn't go before them, they will be the second station to do so.

I sent an e-mail to  Fox 6 engineering last week and received a reply indicating that they would be doing news in HD soon.  It said that it was part of a multi-million dollar upgrade of the antenna and studio.

I can think of three reasons why WISN hasn't gone HD.

1) They're waiting for a major set overhaul, and don't have that budgeted at this time.
2) The move to HD is being overruled by one or more of the anchors (or reporters), who are concerned what they'd look like in HD.
3) They're more worried about doing real journalism than making things look a little prettier.

I would hope it's either 3 or 1, and not 2.

ETA: Surprising to think that the first local commercial station to do HD local broadasts (the Big Bang broadcasts) may end up being one of the last to do HD news broadcasts.

I guess if WISN could use MPTV's HD remote truck for their newscast (same truck for the fireworks) they could be doing the news in HD tomorrow.

Too bad doing the news in HD doesn't make the content any better. aka TMZ4 HD

Touche.  But at least TMZ keeps moving along at a pretty good clip, whereas TMZ4 HD just keeps beating that dead horse, sometimes from two or three different remote shots, way beyond any entertainment or news value.

I think we need more news from TMJ4, I don't think Live at 3:00, Live at 3:30, Live at 4:00 , Live at 4:30, Live at 5:00, live at 6:00 , Live at 6:30 and finaly Live at 10:00 is enough news , oh yeah I forgot about BREAKING NEWS every 2 minutes.

LOL!!!  It's like those dolts have never heard of any other programing!  Too bad that what used to be the #1 network has to resort to news and infomercials.  That's all they are now, news and TIN (a.k.a The Infomercial Network.)  If they keep this up seriously, it's time to end their suffering.  WTMJ should liquidate their assets and sell out to an independent station that plays movies and classic sitcoms.

Anything is better than what they have now.  Kudos to being the first network to do all HD newscasts.  The problem is that's all they have. What a waste WTMJ has become!

Ch. 4 isn't alone in over-doing "Breaking News".  For national events, they have little control over what the network determines a Breaking News-worthy event, for local stuff, yeah, maybe they could use a little more discretion..  I still say they aren't alone in over doing it... The Informercials have nothing to do with NBC, that is a local decision by Ch. 4 to dump programming from NBC that they feel is low rated, and use that opportunity to generate revenue.  Its mostly done on Saturday nights, which is the least watched night on TV.

NBC has gone down in the ratings, yes, that is due to poor programming skills on their part, and has nothing to do with Ch. 4, therefore that part of your criticism is unfair.  As for local ratings, I believe Ch. 4 is...or was #1 in the 10:00 news recently...they still could be...I don't recall now

I've noticed recently that when watching WITI's HD feed, the occasional blue bar is seen peeking through the left side of the video (see attachments). Since there is a lighter blue line in the bar and seem to appear on video that's more than a few days old, I'd assume these are "sidebars" and not just some weird video problem. WFLD in Chicago did this over the summer prior to launching HD as well.

Please note: these screencaps were taken on 6-2, however the same bar is visible on 6-1 at times.

I've always been impressed w/ the quality that comes out of this group....w/o giving you long technical talk about upconverting SD to HD and then coverting it back to SD (which I doubt I could handle very well) you are basically correct......the time is coming.........soon.

Chuck,

Are you guys using the Evertz 1202 in Master for HD?

WITI6fan

The new weather graphics premiered this morning... Funfact: the online version seems to be 16:9 as you can see stuff you can't see on TV (notibly the "6 DAY PLANNER" bar fades off on the right, and on TV it just ends at the 4:3 boundry.)...
