HDMI Switch Questions

My AVR only has 2 HDMI ports and would like to add another component that only has HDMI out.  While I'd love to 'upgrade' the AVR, I'm pushing it with the new components already.  :D

Blue Jeans has this 2 in 1 out switch for $25.

It looks like the switch knows which input is active, but I can't tell.  I want to use this with a BD player and a HTPC.

Here are my questions:

1) I'm assuming that when the HTPC is 'on' it will always send a signal to the switch, regardless if it is serving content or not.  Can this switch handle that, or do I need another type of switch?

2) Is there any problem with the HDCP handshake between the BD Player and AVR?

In a perfect world I'd like a switch that doesn't need to be toggled, but if I need to toggle it, I'd prefer one with an IR switch that works with a Harmony remote.

Any comments and suggestions are welcome as I've never used a switch.

I know the HDMI switches at Monoprice.com are highly recommended. They have manual ones and automatic ones.

Thanks - I'll give them a try.

HDMI switchers can be tricky, due to the way different manufacturers have implemented the standard.  What works in one situation may or may not work in another.  Unless you find someone who has the same set up as you due, there's no way to be certain that anything will absolutely work without trying it.

That said, I'd also recommend Monoprice.  Take a look at what they offer.  Most of their items have user reviews.  By skimming though those, you can get a general idea of what parts people have had more success with.  That's not a guarantee, but at least it increases your chances.  In the worst case, they'll let you return it for a refund.  You'll have to pay shipping, but at least you're not stuck with something that doesn't work.

That's what I did.  I purchased one of their 4x2 switchers, and it wouldn't work with all my components (turned my HD A35's output all red).  They issued an RMA for it, and I was able to purchase a 4x1 switch that did work.

They're easy to deal with, and the products they sell are of good quality and a great price and value.

Good luck.  HDMI is a great physical  product, but it's implementation has been a sloppy mess.  Sometimes you might get something to work simply by changing what components are plugged into which inputs.

Thanks Scott-

I've seen mixed reviews with switches.  They either work flawlessly or not a all.  Guess I need to work with a reputable on-line retailer in the chance that the switch I choose doesn't work.

Appreciate the insight.
