Closed Captioning on Navigator?

How do you activate Closed Captioning on Navigator?  Does it work?  What are the settings options?  (or do you use your regular TV remote?)

Press settings and it's right in the first screen.  I tried it and it works.  I know on the 8300HD with Passport it doesn't work, and my other TV won't do CC on the HDMI input... so there's no way of getting it on there til the 8300 gets Navigator.

Thanks for your help!

On a 8300HD with Passport, it's in the same place - press the Settings button, and flip "Display Closed Captions" to "Yes."

I use the feature all the time, as I sometimes have trouble distinguishing words in dialog. I've had several 8300HD boxes, and used the CC feature on all.

Done that, doesn't work.  I know many others have reported this issue with Passport 8300 DVR's.  It should be noted that I have an SD TV and a HD DVR.  But I don't think that has anything to do with it.  Just for reference, on Passport in General Settings, Loadstar what do you have your CC picture and text options set?  There is like Audio Service, than Digital Service, than 63 CC options.  Where do you have your Audio Service and Digital Service set for CC?

Jack

PS.  I'll try it when I get Navigator, but even if it doesn't work than, I'm sticking with my non-C DVR for obvious reasons for as long as I can!

As I recall (not home at the moment, will check when I get there) it's analog service, not audio service. In any case, both are set to CC 1, I believe. I've never adjusted anything in the more granular options - it's just worked all along.

Actually now that I think about it.. I had the 8300HD on my Sony CRT for awhile and closed captioning worked.  I wonder why it's picky about which TV it's on.

Hey All,

Sup?  I'm grateful to the guys over at the AVS Forums for providing this information and wanted to share it with you.  There is a lot of discussion about the features of Navigator and one user brought up the idea of Closed Captioning and why it's such a 50/50 crapshoot as to whether or not it works on the boxes.

An issue with Navigator's and Closed Captioning is that in order for the box's CC to work, this user theorized that the Volume Control and Mute are being controlled by the BOX.  Not the TV.  And I thought about this, because that third option under CC in Navigator is "On With Mute."  But I presume that they are talking about the VOLUME and MUTE on the box.  Not the Volume and Mute on your TV.

When you get cable for the first time the tech usually programs the Power On/Off buttons and Volume by punching in the code for your TV.  This would over-ride the Mute/Volume settings for the box.  BUT, if you pick up a box at Mayfair or a TWC office for example, the settings are obviously set to control the box power and box volume only.  In this case, you have to find the codes to do the following:

1.) Control Power On/Off to your TV and

2.) Control Volume to your TV

So what I am thinking is, people are getting the new C boxes through walk-in offices, and the CC works fine.  People who have the non-C boxes that were originally installed by the cable guy are thinking their CC doesn't work because of the box.  But maybe it's because THE BOX VOLUME/MUTE MUST BE SET TO CONTROL THE CABLE BOX'S OWN CC SYSTEM THROUGH ITS OWN VOLUME AND MUTE CONTROLS.

If your cable box is controlling the Volume and Mute Controls from your own TV. (you have programmed the TV code for this) than obviously, the CC option on the box to control its own CC especially in cases like "On With Mute" won't know what to do.

I have not tested out this theory, as now that I use my Dynamic Headphones I don't even need CC, but it seems to make sense.

Changing Volume to the box had no effect in restoring closed captioning.  AVS Forums reports this is known to be a bug with the non-C boxes, working only about 50% of the time.  C boxes seem to be better at CC, but are often slower on commands and reboots.

Navigator Update on the Closed Captioning Issue: (MDN SA-8300 HD box)

I just want to extend the heads-up that on my SA-8300 HD box, since we got a new Samsung HD TV connected to HDMI cable the Closed Captioning works fine about 97% of the time.

A bug that seems to occur is that every once in a blue moon, actually this has occurred twice in the last two weeks, I will be watching TV with the Navigator CC turned on, and the captions will suddenly change color and freeze on the screen.  The only way to restore CC to an unfreeze status is to reboot the box.  Note that so far, this has only happened when I play back a DVR recording.  Simply turning off CC on the box does not unfreeze the CC image on the screen.  I hope that TWC will work to correct this bug in future software updates.

My CC stopped working about 15 minutes ago and in the diags screen there was an error message about CC and the time it was recorded. They might be updating to a new version of Navigator because earlier today I was getting Guide Data Not Available when I would look for VOD programs in the guide. (I could play the VOD programing through.) I currently have MDN 2.4.4-15.   A more recent build is MDN 2.4.4-16.  San Diego and some areas of North Carolina have MDN 2.4.6-19.

I wonder what version we will get next?

CC came back with an automatic box reboot about 15 hours later.
