In other words, content means alot less than the wrapping?

Boy, that bubbled headed bleach blond who comes on at 5 sure looks great! Too bad she sounds like a rock!  That's OK, It looks good!

The cause is getting more HD content.  If 6/12/58 is your favorite, good for you.   If 6/12/58 lose enough viewership, they will also switch to HD, and then you have your favorite news in HD.

6/12/58 aren't going to switch for the betterment of mankind; they are in it for profit.  If it doesn't matter that that they upgrade, they won't any time soon.

Well said. I would rather watch things that are not as good because they are in HD. why? Because that channel is making a commitment to us.....the people who spend thousands of $$$ buying HD gear.

Quote from: khafferkamp;52538i just want to say welcome to the site..

most of us are passionate about HD and TMJ4 does look good

but for me i want to hear good news and fox 6 has that for me

i also want to see good picture quality fox 6 doesn't have that for me (sadly)

i still watch fox 6 but am thinking about switching to tmj4 because of them haveing HD

question: are the fs Wisconsin studios still at witi even though you arent O&O any more

if that is true would you happen to know about what is going on with not all the games in hd .. if not its ok..

also will your main studio be getting a new set soon it needs it in my mind the wake up set is great but the normal news set is just i dont know sorry to say..

also r things different at the station after the switch from O&O to local tv if so what are some differences..

why didn't fox 6 make its logo vertical when it got the new graphics package

thank you for your time

Kurt - many great questions -

FSN moved out our bldg a few years back - I do not have an update on the # of HD games they are going to carry except to say I know that they wanted to carry as many as they could.

The new company is very good - they too believe in being a strong local station which means being a part of our community.

studio A (main news studio) went through a bunch of upgrades last yr - it is ready for HD.

We stayed w/ the horizontal logo because we felt it worked better for us here in Mke - it fit in w/ the look of our news product.

Chuck

khafferkamp

thank you very much for the answers

I wish more people inside the stations would join this because i think we all like having our questions answered

thanks

Quote from: duncantuna;52499I'll second (tenth) the vote.

I used to watch 6, but once TMJ4 went HD, I switched.

6, 12, 58 .. all look like news for children now.

I'm really surprised the others haven't rushed in, allowing TMJ to soak up all the HD viewers.

Same for me - I feel the local new content is pretty much the same. I might as well watch things in glorious HD!

For most TV, if it's not in HD, I usually won't bother.

Bluto

When TMJ made the commitment to HD news, I made the switch.  But their "TMZ-style" of journalism wasn't what I prefer in news, so I changed back to Fox6.

That doesn't mean I'll wait forever, Chuck.  So, chop-chop on the HD local news, please. :D

If I may rant a little...

The set in Studio A is, in my opinion, starting to get a bit stale. I can't put my finger on it, but during the refresh last year, it lost something that made it stand out. In my opinion, a new duratran behind the desk to a skyline picture with minimal or no additional graphics added (like the one in Studio B) might improve the anchor area. Another thing that needs to go is the CRT monitors in the weather area...

I realize times are tough for everyone, including TV stations, but if it's possible, getting FX Group (or someone else) in there to do a complete refresh of the set probably wouldn't hurt.

Just a few suggestions. You are, after all, the one that went to school and know more about this stuff than I. :)

I don't remember the last time I sat down and "watched" a local news broadcast.  I'll have it on while I do other things. I may glance at the screen from time to time but that's it.  I don't need to see a big yellow sun on the weather map whether it's HD or not.

And I certainly won't watch shows that are not as good just because they are in HD.  If the content is crap the show is crap.  No matter how it looks.

I agree about TMJ going TMZ style.  No thanks.  When Mike Goucha, who I thought was very good, had enough and bailed, so did I.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with WITI6fan above, although I think it needs a lot more than just a new duratrans... the whole thing needs a new look and feel. Lose the useless "second floor" balcony, the CRT and CRT-looking duratrans, and the light blue background.

(Studio B is a winner from beginning to end, though... love it! I wish the evening news was done from there!)

3 items, for whatever they're worth:
a) I can receive your signal pretty reliably now in northern Cook Co. Illinois  So you're doing a great job on that transmitter.  Much better than analog

b) Don't do what WLS did.... WLS has put 2 720p channels and 1 480i channel in that 6 MHz channel.  ABC looks like crap.  The second channel, Livwell looks crappier.  For those of you in Milwaukee that can get WLS, check it out.  it's a perfect example of what NOT to do with digital TV.  If you do go the route of a 6-2, then try to keep it to a SD 480i picture and allocate as much of the bits as you can to the main FOX channel.

that being said, DirecTV and Dish are probably never going to carry subchannels.  So, you and the NAB need to lean on them to make hybrid receivers capable of receiving the over the air subchannels.  Right now they satellite companies are doing a half-hearted job to please some people with the accessory OTA tuner which isn't even supported all that well from software to TV listings to channel mappings, etc.

c)Could you guys do something to make that weather segment on the news more interesting?  That weather garden stuff was cute in the 90s, but is pretty lame now.  Get some nice maps and someone explaining what's going on in the studio. It just seems more professional and intimate with the viewer to me.

If you are referencing our wx deck I will say that it is one of our more popular and recongnizable features at the station.  I would agree that graphics are a powerful part of the wx presentation and we all spend a lot of money for that very purpose, but much more important are the meteoroligists who present the information.  I've always felt that Vince and his team do a great job of not only telling you 'what' is about to happen but 'why'.

Thanks for the comments.

You know...  That's actually one of my pet peeves. No matter what weather report I'm watching (usually WISN), I always want them to just get to the forecast. I don't have all night to wait and see what tomorrow's weather is going to be (I more often than not fall asleep as they talk about wind currents, cold fronts, jet stream, fronts, clouds etc...). I just want them to get to the 5 day forecast and be done with it. Not drag it all out for ten minutes.

If I wanna know WHY the weather is what it is, I'll fire up my weather app on my PC when I have the time to investigate the weather trends. :)

You should work for WDJT's promotions department. :D

Just 10 minutes! Just 10 minutes! Just 10 minutes of your day!

The weather segments are one of the high points of WITI's newscasts.  I wouldn't change a thing, other than updating to HD graphics when the time comes.

Now, if a little more time could be spent on hard news items, that would be an improvement.
