For the new Samsung DVR's, I have heard there are two models being given out by TWC corporate, the Samsung 3090 and the Samsung 3070.  Do both have 160GB drives as the default?  What is the difference between these boxes?

Any bugs to report with these boxes because they are so new?  If you had a choice between an 8300HDC that was tried, true and tested and finally has the bugs out, do you go with that or a new Samsung?

I am hearing mixed reviews on the Samsung boxes over at AVS. What models are TWC bringing out for box swaps?

I am getting mixed reports on the new Samsungs,

What is the general consensus of the forum? If your box goes out, do you try to get a Samsung or knowing that some of the divisions that have them have some bugs, do you go with the SA-8300HDC?

What we should do is ask the following:

Is it true that the general consensus is that the Samsung 3070 DVR is etter than the Samsung 3090 because the 3090 is still buggy? What's the difference between these models?

I think that in about six months, the Samsung will be the way to go. But right now, if I had a division with a good track record with the Samsung, I would probably ask for that box. But than again, some divisions are actually reporting better performance with the SA-8300HDC because of Samsung's bugs. I think the Samsung DVR's are out in Milwaukee, but I have not contacted TWC about their performance, or a need for a new box as my old SA-8300HD (MDN) works just fine.

Oh is it true that the Samsung 3070 DVR has 160GB/RAM and the 3090 has 360GB/RAM? If not, what determines the amount of memory in these new boxes?

Those with TWC,

Please note that the AVS forum is reporting that the new Samsung 3270 boxes are being put on hold because of a problem with the Video on Demand Channels.  The issue is that the VOD channels aren't working with the new Samsung 3270.  This bug is being reported in the San Diego area, but so far, seems to be affecting all the new DVR Samsung 3270 boxes.

Any similar issues here in Milwaukee, please post.  Most are sticking with the SA boxes, until the Samsung issues are resolved.

For all TWC Techs and Customers,

Just received word from my friends at the AVS forum who are in touch with TWC-Corporate.  The latest model Samsung DVR, this is the SMT-H3270 DOES NOT SUPPORT PIP capability.  It is believed that Samsung sacrificed this feature in exchange for the bigger hard drive in the new SMT-3270

Please note TWC-Milwaukee that the Samsung SMT-H3090 DOES work and support PIP, although it has the traditional 160GB hard drive, the same with the older but also well supported SA-8300HDC DVR's.

TWC-Milwaukee should keep the SA-8300HDC's and the SMT-3090's in stock for these reasons.

PS. A side-note is that the Video on Demand bug in the Samsung 3270's has been fixed, but the loss of PIP functionality may be a major frustration for customers who switch to this model.  Go with the SA-8300HDC or the Samsung 3090.

Boy, I use PIP maybe twice a year.

I might use it more if the placement of the window was actually in the upper left, instead of on the SD border.   (8300HDC)

At least they still give you the option to move the PIP screen.  But I agree!  It should be closer to the corners.

I heard that on the Samsungs and HDC boxes, although the IPG is "stretched" regardless of output resolution or screen settings, the PIP DOES actually appear closer to the right corner of the screen for HD sets.  The reason for the IPG placing PIP more in the center of the screen on the non-C SA-8300's is because a hardware limitation in the older SA-8300 non-C boxes, keeps the guide at 4x3 even on an HD 16x9 set OR HD box.

It is hoped that a software update for the HDC/Samsung boxes will display the Navigator guide in a true 16x9 output resolution. (Non-stretched.)

Are the 320gb Samsung 3270's available in the Milwaukee area yet?

Also are there any current boxes that work with an external eSata drive other than the 8300HD not HDC?

dylan727

I traded in my Scientific Atlanta 8300HDC HD-DVR Cable box and my Samsung SMT-H3050 HD Cable box and was given the following:

Scientific Atlanta 8240HDC HD-DVR Cable box - Manufactured: 11/18/2009

Scientific Atlanta 4240HDC HD Cable box - Manufactured: 12/02/2009

I asked when I first got there about getting a Samsung DVR box and was told that "you don't want that box because it holds less HD then the Scientific Atlanta DVR because it doesn't compress it and we don't have any in-stock".

This was at the Mayfair mall location in Wauwatosa.

I needed my Samsung SMT-H3050 box swapped anyway because the info bar would get stuck on the screen when changing channels unless you pressed info to turn it off and resetting it would only fix it for a few hours, so I guess it wasn't a total loss.

Well the new 8240HDC box works fine but the 4240HDC is stuck flashing ErLd and brti on the display and wont boot up, so now they have to send a tech out to replace it, probably because there is big dent in the bottom of the box from someone dropping it or something.

dylan727

Tech came out and replaced my broken SA 4240HDC with a Samsung SMT-H3050, I asked about replacing my 8240HDC with a black Samsung DVR and he said they haven't received any of those boxes for a while, but also said they were nice and he had 3 of those black Samsung DVRs in use at his house lol.
