I've been using the weekend to catch up on some shows I recorded late this week.  I just want to say thank you to TMJ4 for not broadcasting any NBC shows
Wednesday or Thursday.  They are the only local station that I recorded shows on that didnt show network shows in high def.

What would we all do if we didnt have TMJ4 to let us know that it was going to be cold in January, in WI??

Completely ridiculous and unacceptable.

Yeah, they suck.  Someone posted an e-mail address to WTMJ on this thread:

I know several people have e-mailed them already.

Wednesday night (1/14/2009) ABC completely ruined the 3 hour Lost recap.  It was in 4x3 SD with a crawl on the botton.  Fortunately it wasn't the season opener.

Last night (Fri. 1/23/09) I was looking forward to Jay Leno in HD. Not to be!! CH4 just had to display their logo with the important weather info, Temp (+15 deg and wind-chill about +3 deg). I really don't know how anybody could live without knowing how cold it is. Thanks WTMJ..... NOT!!!

the only show I watch on tmj4 is Jay Leno & Nightly News and they were both on SD NOT HD yesterday and today . This is just realy stupid , them telling us how cold it is. I have had it with these idiots  "WTMJ 4".

Anyone know the forecast for Feb. 1st? I dont care if a F5 tornado clashes with an Alberta clipper and they terrorize the entire Milwaukee area with acid snow, WTMJ4 better not put up the graphics during the SB.

RonH

I would assume they would be less likely to screw over the super bowl broadcast, but I wouldn't put it past them.  If there is a planned 6" of snow overnight and school closings the next day, I think their station manager would consider dropping out of HD.

I think during packer games recently, CBS/FOX have dropped out during commercials and halftime when there is a small snow storm to let us know it is snowing. I guess that is a step in the right direction.

There weather forecasts display a culture of fear.  It's almost as if they feel the way to get more viewers is to scare helicopter parents into thinking their children are going to die if they don't watch WTMJ to be informed that it is 11F in January in Wisconsin!

Stanley Kritzik

For those of us who get OTA 36-7, there's the NOAA forecast (without all the BS -- guys standing in 2" of snow, etc.)  If TW would pick 36-7 up then TMJ could can all their weather prophets who are telling us things we don't need to know, while they merrily screw up HD programs.

I hope they dont plan on inturrupting anybody who was planning to watch The Last Templar tonight.

I've been looking forward to it since I started seeing it advertised a few weeks ago.  If they interrupt the HD broadcast I will NOT watch and they will lose ratings to a network that is broadcasting something in HD.

Part of me wishes that they would show the Super Bowl in standard definition so we would all know that it may snow or the temperatures may drop.

That might be enough to actually get people to complain.

Much of their programming in the past few days has been shown is SD, just so we can be told that the temps are in the teens.

In Wisconsin.

In January.

It really is absurd.

This afternoon, I sent an email off to Steve Wexler, Vice President & General Manager of WTMJ, expressing my frustration and disappointment in their attitude towards their HD viewers.  I reminded him that viewers have other choices, and will patronize those stations that respect us.  I'm not expecting a reply, but I hope it at least gets read before it's deleted.

I've also been tempted to contact NBC, and let them know how their local affiliate is mutilating their programming.  Maybe that's the next step.

Within a few years this will resolve in one of two ways:

1.  They get the equipment necessary to do this all in HD (Although that does not get at the root of the problem).
2.  Local TV is no longer profitable and what's left of the broadcast networks figures out how to get their ads to you some other way

You just have to take it for granted that if these guys think they will catch more eyes with their silly closings crawls and so forth, they will do it.  They do not care about you because you are not paying them. If you can figure out a way to fix that, you are all set.

For example, buy a car dealership and buy lots of ad time, with a clause in the contract that says you will not pay for any ads if HD programs are downconverted for any reason.  That will change things pretty fast in today's business climate.

I just wanted to report back that I got a response back from Mr. Wexler almost immediately.  It's encouraging to know that they do listen to their viewers.

Their programming is still in SD, though.

On Sunday TMJ downgraded HD programming to SD again - including NBC news.

Found an email address for Steve Wexler the General Manager of WTMJ.  Sent my comments to Mr. Wexler regarding WTMJ's finding it more important to show the outside temperature is 8 degrees than showing NBC's HD programming.

Maybe if others do the same, might do more than sending emails to WTMJ's general email address. Guessing emails to the general email address rarely make it to upper management.

Just a thought.

It appearss Steve Wexler's email with the Journal Broadcast group is swexler@journalbroadcastgroup.com

Well, they did.  Evidently, it's very important to let viewers know that it's 7 degrees outside.

I was going to watch this.  But, seeing that it's in standard definition, I'll pass.

Maybe I'll catch it in reruns.  Unless we have threatening rainstorms by then.

Shameful.
