CBS Gets RCA To Sponsor AFC Playoffs in HDTV

Written by Jerry Del Colliano

TV and AV industry experts say sports is the "killer application" for HDTV therefore CBS has teamed up with RCA to cover both the AFC Divisional Playoff Games on January 11 and 12, 2003 as well as the AFC championship game in January 19, 2003 in HDTV.

The games will be broadcast in the 1080i widescreen format on at least 83 CBS owned affiliate stations which broadcast in digital HDTV. CBS claims this covers as much as 72 percent of the country. CBS is rapidly adding to the number of stations that broadcast HDTV. They hope to have 100 stations live by kick off of the first game which reportedly will reach 83 percent of the nation.

With the price of large, rear projection HDTVs dipping down well below $2,000 per set, hardcore fans may be given good reason to finally upgrade to a new set before the big game. While HDTV is far from dominant as a format – CBS has quite a bit of its prime time programming available in HDTV and is showing a willingness to swallow (or find a sponsor for) the hefty expense of producing HDTV events live. Viewers are truly appreciative. The difference between upconverted HDTV and an event filmed in native HDTV is night and day.
