Cable not available in Genoa City

This is in regards to MPTV & WDJT vs D*

Why do they assume that cable is available to everyone in their market? They broadcast channels via cable and not D*. Apparently they don't realize that not everyone has a cable line in front on their home. We live 2 miles from Genoa City, but no cable company is going to spend the money to lay down cable lines to only a handful of customers; there would be no return in their investment.

That being said, DSB is our ONLY choice since we live 1/4 mile from the Illinois border and getting an OTA signal is next to impossible... we live in a wooded area. Are there any inexpensive OTA antennas out there that can receive a signal from 40+ miles and also be mounted in the attic? We don't want to fork out a lot of money for 1 or 2 channels. It seems lame to switch back and forth from DSB to OTA for two channels. It would put a major damper on channel surfing, not to mention DVR-ing.

Our only hope is that things will change in February.

I'm not in a wooded area, but I am in Genoa City and OTA reception is great from my house (I'm on Fenmore Ln). I have the $30 Radio Shack u75-r with a $25 Magnavox pre-amplifier from Menard's. I'm able to get WMVS-DT (broadcast on channel 8) with the UHF antenna. You may want to try that antenna with Radio Shack's easy return policy, or consider the Channel Master 4228 or Antennas Direct 91XG, but those run closer to the $100 price range.

Troy,

Do you have just OTA transmission as well?

I also have Dish Network, but I don't subscribe to local channels through Dish. My Dish receiver has an OTA tuner, where I can plug my antenna into my receiver and record on my DVR. I also have my antenna hooked up directly to my TV, and also have some converters for my VCR and old analog TV's.

All local channels are available on both Dish and DirecTV, but I prefer OTA. The satellite services (and cable, for that matter) do not offer the subchannels, and only three locals are in HD. Also I would have to add another Dish to receive the three HD locals offered on Dish (4, 6, 12).

One problem is you cant get channel 58 over here in some area with an OTA.

DirecTV carries the locals anyway on one dish.

Only problem is Jim Hall will not let the carry the HD feed.:bang:

But Chicago's CBS channel has changed there digital channel so I can now get CBS out of Chicago

Jim Hall would love to have DirecTV carry 58's HD feed. He and DirecTV just haven't been able to come to terms on an agreement that makes financial sense to both parties.

Hi Troy,

How does recording OTAs work with Dish when you do not pay them for the locals?  Do you get guide data, or do you have to set time / channel, like an old-school VCR?  I'm thinking of getting the TurboHD package, and every rep I talk to has a different answer about that.  (They also can't give me a straight or consistent answer about getting FSN With TurboHD.)

Thanks,
Will

You won't get guide data without subscribing to locals through Dish Network. The OTA channels you add will show up in the guide, but will say "digital service" for each one. You can still record OTA exactly how you described it, like programming a VCR. You have to create a manual timer by selecting the channel, start time, and end time. It's a few extra steps more than having the guide, but it's still really simple to do and it's worth saving $5/month on the bill (call me frugal).
