Guess who is going be a Neilsen Family!

Yup... I get to report my TV viewing to the Neilsen ratings people in October. I was surprised that it will be actual diaries and not the meters that measure automatically.

When I was a radio program director and we reviewed the ratings diaries we often saw people who under-reported or mis-reported their listening habits to try and punish stations that were doing things they didn't like. We'd see comments in the back that would be something like: I listened to (station) all week at work, but I'm not reporting any listening because they changed their music."

I though for a minute who I might be able to punish like that, and while a few came to mind, I just decided to report my actual viewing as accurately as possible.

So now you can never say "I don't know anyone who was ever contacted to take TV or radio Ratings surveys."

That's interesting about the journaling.  I'd have thought they didn't do that any more.

Anyhoo .. I was almost a Nielsen family site .. long story short, they couldn't attach all their gizmos to all my (relatively simple) home AV system.  After a couple hours of electronic surgery (that scared the bejesus out of me), they quit and "fired" me.

I would have loved it had they offered a journal, instead.  (Then I could watch all my porn without them knowning.  :D )

The whole story is here:

Interesting.  I remember my folks doing the diary back in the '70's !  I guess some things really never change...

Doesn't agreeing to be a Neilsen Family come with an NDA of some sort?

I was under the same impression.

P.S.  Tom, please watch Supernatural tonight!  :D

I've only been through the phone call process, and nobody said anything about not telling yet.

I'll pinky swear if they need me to that I won't tell anyone how I fill out my diary (which won't be here till next week), and won't be affected by anyone trying to influence my viewing habits.

So when is Supernatural on? :rof:

Thursdays at 8:00 PM on the CW! ;)

My encouragement of is totally unrelated to whether or not anyone here or on any other forum is part of the Neilsen ratings group.  It is not meant to influence any measurement of viewership, but only to draw attention to a quality show that, unfortunately, is stuck at the lower end of the ratings scale.

Or something like that.

Uh, no.  Let's just say we'd like to avoid any Imperial entanglements.

Actually, it's my legal out, since I'm requesting someone to watch something on a channel that no longer exists, secretly hoping that the WB-CW connection is strong enough that the desired result will still occur.

Or I was just sloppy.  I should have known better, especially after your reply in the AVS forum thread.

Sorry about that,

Scott
