Anyone actually bought a BR player since the war was declared over?

I will not get one til it hits $300 or X-mas, which ever comes  first.

When a next gen gaming system is also the cheapest/best player something is wrong.

They need to get some decent players out for $200 or less.

I am also in wait mode.  I'm not convinced that BD will withstand the assault of net delivery.

AndrewP

It is worth for me not more then $100.
Until then the upconverter is fine for 2-3 DVDs/month.

I won't consider it before the 2.0 profile and less than $200. My Toshiba HD-A2 does a GREAT job of upconverting. Even on the 126" screen. I'm in no hurry.

The BD numbers are for set top players.  I believe the PS3 numbers are not included as a set top box so the numbers are a little deceiving as the PS3 has definitely been picking up steam in the BD market.

PS3 is not only for gaming, as many folks I know use it for both, even without children in the house (or grandchildren).
If I had known how great the PS3 is for fast loading and its extensive upgradability (including DTS-HD MA, upconverting abilities and Profile 2.0) added since then)
- I maybe would never have bought my Panasonic BD players.
The PS3 can be had for under $400(still pricey for many) and I use it as an internet browser, too as well as a CD player and so on.
-But that is still less expensive for a machine that "morphs" into something newer and better all the time (My Panasonics cost more).
Even the remote can be used with IR with an addon to match my IR universal remote, too.
The only thing bad I can say about the PS3 is you have to allow some air circulation around it, but it is relatively quiet, otherwise and it plays well.
Maybe the other manufacturers out there should copy the PS3's inner workings, less the gaming part and lower their pricing, then we'd have some real competition against the DVD players...but that's just me I guess.:D

I've been saying the exact thing for months.

We're told that Sony's not losing money on the new PS3s.  All they'd have to do is rip out the parts devoted to gaming, add analog outputs, and price it at $250.  That would be a killer machine.

I don't think we'll ever see it though.

The real problem isn't the cost of the players, that's just a one time fee, it's the cost of the freakin high cost movies! Who in their right mind would spend $34-39 for one  movie?

Didn't you ever hear about amazon.com?  Didn't you know that you can rent Blu-ray at Blockbuster?  At our Blockbusters, for $29.99, you can rent Blu-rays 2 at a time for 3 days unlimited rentals.  So how is that expensive?

TPK

For those with a media center PC setup, an internal blu-ray player can be had for $130 or so....

Maybe because I have a movie collection, renting movies isn't something I want to do.  I've gotten tons of deals from Amazon.com, in fact back when they were doing the BOGO sales (before HD-DVD dead off) that's where most of my movies came from. Now that HD-DVDs are history, those BOGO are a thing of the past.

While deals can be found on Bluray (and remaining HD-DVD) titles, the prices are still WAY too expensive.  I was an early adopter of DVD, and most disks ran about $20 at local stores, almost everything could be found for $15 online, and some could be found for <$10.  Granted that was when online shopping was relatively new, and many stores offered low DVD prices on big name titles to get people to visit their sites.  But part of the reason for the low disk prices was to get people to buy players.  Now, most stores seem to want to stick it to customers and charge a premium for both the player and the disks.  Personally I wont buy a player until they drop to around $150 or disk prices drop <$20.  The later probably wont happen so I will likely wait for the former.

The wholesale price for a new releases regular DVD is about $16.

The wholesale price for Blu-ray new releases is $23.45 for Sony disks and $18 from catalog.
