The catch is you need 2 dishes to get them!!!!  :bang:

They put them on satellite 61.5, not 129.  And, they are not mirrored!
I was lied to as recently as yesterday by DN.  They said I'd be able to pick them up with my Dish 1000.  Not true!

If there are no plans to mirror the Milwaukee HD locals to 129, I am gone.
I waited 2 years and now I can't get them.  I don't want my house looking like a Weather station.  And, no an OTA antenna won't work!

I signed up for Directv yesterday when I found out that I would need a second dish installed to get HD locals from Dish. They are supposed to be here Friday morning for the installation. I have had Dish for 2 1/2 years and have been lied to since day one. Finally had enough of the lies and lack of HD National channels and I am making the move to Directv. With them everything is on one dish.

I am in the same boat as you.   I got all excited tonight when I received a phone call from Dish indicating that the the local HDs are now available.   I called....then got hit with the 2nd Dish crap.  I for one, do NOT want my house looking like a fricken doppler radar.    I called back and complained and asked that they forward my complaint to management.  I also asked if the second dish is only for HD locals and she said no.  There is a possibility to use the second dish for more HD programming.  What a bunch of crud.  Who the heck wants 2 dishes on their home?
On a more programming level..I checked the available HD channels...only 3.  Fox 6, Channel 12, and Channel 4.   No CBS.   Same as DirectTv.

Sigh.

:Smash:

Um ... I don't mind two dishes!  I had two for a really long time.  It's been less than a year that I am down to just one.  Still have 3 other antennas on my roof.  So what's the big deal?  We are in the communication age.  What do you expect?  Sublight waves that can travel through any material?

Get over it.

The only valid question (I got that recording last nite, but didn't call back) is, will Dish pay for the install, or do I have to?

Of course, the reason I didn't call is I get all the OTA locals HD with my 722, so it's simply not a big deal for me to get them twice.

I ordered "D" on the 9th and canceled the order today. They were supposed to be here this morning to do an installation. I got a call about 9:00 am from the installer that he had no HD equipment and only had the 2 standard boxes that I was going to use on TV's in my bedrooms. I told him that was not acceptable and no install would be done until he had all the equipment that he needed. He suggested that I call Directv and reschedule. I called them told them about my problem with the installation, and how I wasted time off from work for something that wasn't going to happen. They checked with the distributor for the equipment (put me on a 3 way call). They told me that the truck didn't arrive in time and that the HD equipment was in short supply. I asked them if they rescheduled if they could guarantee that the installer would have the equipment then. I was told NO. I told the Directv rep that was the reason that I dropped them 3 years ago. I always had problems with their installers. I canceled the order and told them that I probably would not consider ever using then again because of this problem and the problems that I had in the past. So I guess I will just stick with "E".

So, yeah, I'm OK with a second dish also... I too only recently went from a two-dish scenario (Super Dish 110, 119, 121 and Dish 500 pointed at 129) to a single dish (Dish 1000) and had to pay for that because of contract issues, etc. blah, blah, blah. When I switched over to a single dish I utilized my old super dish mount for an OTA antenna. So now I really don't have a place to mount the second dish even though I have an extra dish (my previous Dish 500 for 129), BUT... Dish still has to charge me $99 for an install. After complaining enough, they dropped it down to $50... What? I'm so frustrated I can't even explain.:bang:

Um ... I hate to say this, but wait until you try to get the 61.5 dish installed from Dish.  They are not any better!  hideing_behind_compu

Here is the article about this from the Journal-Sentinel:

http://blogs.jsonline.com/cuprisin/archive/2008/04/11/one-dish-subscriber-s-story.aspx

But why exactly do you need two dishes from Dish Network to get local HD content?  That's just stupid.

First I'm back.

This is Dish Network all NEW "Eastern Arc"  MPEG 4 only serivce they are starting later this year.  Goto Satelliteguy.us and do a sreach for the Eastern Arc and listen to there podcast too.

All the channels both SD & HD will only be in MPEG 4 format you'll need a VIP rec.  plus the signal strenght at 61.5 is much better than 129 right now.  IMHO get the dish put up at 61.5 and you wouldn't be disapointed.  Then in about year you will not need the dish at 119/110 anymore.

Just got a tech. support guy at Dish to give me the second dish install free of charge. I found an article online that stated an FCC ruling that Dish cannot charge for installation or equipment of local channels if they put them on a side slot like 61.5 and you a paying for a local package. So the moral of the story is, threaten them with the FCC if you can't get what you want...

Dish's system must not be updated correctly - I spoke with a CSR and she said that I didn't need a wing dish.  I asked if she was sure and she said her system would tell her if I did.  I'm not so sure, but I played along.  Thanks for the heads up on the FFC rule - my first chat with them told me it was going to be $60 or a 24 month commitment.  Any chance on a link to said rule?

jsmith

Well, not exactly a link to the ruling, but I got my info. from the following link when I was attempting to learn how to install it myself...

I just got an email stating that since HD locals are in my area and I am an HD subscriber that I can get a Free Upgrade. I called 1-888-290-3270 and that was indeed the case. They are coming out in a little over a week to add a "wing dish" to my current setup. The catch is you have to commit to 24 more months from now or pay $59 for the install.

As far as the other comments about the FCC not letting them charge for getting locals.... I'm not sure, but I think that only applies to 1 set of local channels.  The SD locals are available to anyone with a dish 1000. I read a few comments on that FCC ruling online and didn't see anything stating that they were required to give us the equipment to receive HD locals for free.

If you already have an antenna why down grade to get it over dish plus loose additional channels they do not carry, plus having to pay extra for locals?

I already have OTA for my local HD channels, but I'll be taking them up on the free dish install offer just incase they add more channels to 61.5 in the future. Right now I think the only other thing on 61.5 is international channels which I have no interested in.  Who knows, the free upgrade may not be available forever. I'll still keep my antenna up for OTA locals since that doesn't go out when a storm comes through.
