Curious if anyone has purchased this from the DTV website and connected it?  I want to move forward with this but looking for some feedback first.

Trying to find it on their site...link?  Or directions to it?

You need to click on my programming and equipment and click on add kit.  Here is a link from DBSTalk.com

I did not use the D* kit but I did setup Netgear's version and it worked amazingly well. Where I did see issues is crossing circuits. I was trying to have a server running in my garage. Bandwidth was fine and the connection was plenty stable but latency was just to high for my uses.  Honestly if it is your only option I would say go for it or just buy from BestBuy or another bigbox store. Then you know you can return it without an issue if it doesn't meet your needs.

One CAT5 cable - plug one end into your router and the other into the DVR - run network setup on DVR and wha la you're connected. No kit required.

So... what does connecting your dvr to your home network get you?

Can you access video on a shared hard drive on your TV?
Can you access video on the dvr from a pc?
Will it use the internet and make the phone line connection unnecessary?

Number one for me is I can stream my music from my hard drive and play in on my stereo.
I can also view my photos on a slideshow on my big screen tv and if desired add background music to it.
Yes video from your hard drive can be streamed to the TV though its hit or miss as to which format you can stream.
For VOD you stream the video over the internet to the DVR.
The phoneline I believe is only necassary if you want to order pay per view thru your remote or if you want to see caller id on your tv.

You cannot stream for the DVR to the pc....... yet!

For my situation, router is on different floor than HR21.  I was going to go with wireless and until I saw the kit on the DTV website and read reviews on dbstalk.com.  Trying to see if anyone has had success with it here

I have my DVR connected to my router. all that is does os provide connectivity to download VOD. I may also be able to order PPV, but I never have done so.

Are there other things that I should be able to do? I really don't have a home network set up, I really only have my DVR connected to routed to connect to the internet. Maybe that doesn't gain me much.

With WMP11 or TVersity (not sure which Mac product) you can view Photos, stream Music, and view Videos from your PC.  The view video portion is only Mpeg2 w/ WMP11, however TVersity will transcode AVI and other files as well (but still does not work with 100% of filess). Also, FF/RW don't work without an intel viiv server.
