SA 8300HDC external drive

Just picked up a TWC SA 8300HDC box with the latest Navigator updates.  After reading numerous posts regarding the compatability of external HDD's plus issues resulting from the Navigator change/update I'm now utterly confused.  Please can anyone confirm if and which type of external HDD will work with the latest SA 8300HDC/Navigator set up.
