Poor PQ on CBS 58 for Badgers Game?

I haven't really watched much sports on CBS since the addition of ME TV on the subchannel, but this picture quality of the broadcast (UW vs. Michigan State, 3/15) is horrible in my opinion.  Is this a case of bandwidth being sucked away by the two subchannels now?  Am I the only one that notices this?

I also noticed the same thing.  PQ was not so hot.  I just assumed that the addition of ME-TV was the culprit.  For the record, I was(am) watching OTA

I watched a couple other games on CBS this weekend too, and the picture on those was fine.  The only games I noticed a problem with was the Big 10 games broadcast from Indianapolis - I assume it was a problem unique to the equipment or feed that CBS was using.  Nothing else on CBS last weekend looked so bad.

I have UVerse, but checked it on my OTA too - picture was about the same on both.

I to noticed a slight tic when they went to a Big Ten game. Slightly less picture quality then the other games on CBS. I have U-Verse not OTA same problem here in SE WI.:(

I also notice a little lower PQ OTA on 58.1, but the quality was never totally great, esp w/ motion, particularly during basketball games.

How do the motion artifacts and PQ compare with other NBA or NFL stuff on Network TV?

In my situation, it's about the same. On both of my displays the Mits RPTV and my Samsung Plasma, the motion artifacts on CBS sports is always there and is quite annoying at times.

I get the same artifacts on any 1080i sports broadcast NBC, CBS, NFL, etc.

Doesn't matter what sport.

I can only view CBS58-1 OTA of course.

It's also worth mentioning that both of the Milwaukee stations showing 1080i have also made the (unfortunate) decision to multi-cast, leading to poorer picture quality.

Also noticed problem on CBS-58.1 with artifacts during movement.  Switched to CBS-5.1 from Green Bay, and the quality was noticably better, very good quality and no artifacts noticed during movement.

For the record CBS 5.1 from Green Bay does NO multicasting.   Fortunate to have a choice where I live being able to receive both Milwaukee and Green Bay locals via OTA.:D

Happy Easter everyone:wave:

Someone in another thread measured the bit rate of CBS 58.1's broadcast and it is ranging from 8-12Mbit/sec, not the standard 19Mbit/sec, so they have cut it way down.  So multicasting of two subchannels combined with an interlaced broadcast to begin with results in poor PQ for fast motion sports.

Although, don't direcTV or u-verse both end up with around 8Mbit/sec for their HD channels?  Perhaps this is acceptable for MPEG4, but not for OTA MPEG2?

using rabbit ears for the Badger game I had lots of breakups at the beginning of the game and them it settled down and now is better. Is this a rabbit ear problem or CBS-58 problem? Anyone else have this problem?

LoadStar

I'm watching on Time Warner in New Berlin, and I don't think I've seen this many breakups in a LONG time. Yes, it's HD - but it's abysmal quality HD. It's only affecting 505 (WDJT), so I don't think it's the service to the building.

Ken, I use a roof top antenna at home and I was getting break ups.

Also using rabbit ears at the office, We're about 1/2 a mile from 58's tower and had more breakups than at home.

Well at least now I can eliminate the antenna as the cause of the problem. Guess we know that the real cause of the problem is we have a 3rd rate local television station   (58) broadcasting a major television network (CBS). With the reduction of multicasting I was expecting a first rate HD production out of 58. Instead I got nothing but picture freezes spoiling the overall enjoyment of March Madness. Sorry Jim Hall gotta call it like I see it. Perhaps a bigger antenna where I can grab the signal out of a quality station (Green Bay or Chicago) is in order. Or perhaps 58 could sell the station to someone who actually cares about their customers!!

Dear HD & NCAA Fans;

In regards to the postings on the reception over-the-air and on Time Warner Cable in New Berlin, I monitor our over-the-air reception with various antennae, including rabbit ears and also living in New Berlin myself with TWC, experienced no break-ups as mentioned above.   I suspect for the over-the-air break ups has to due with the antenna, cabling and/or amps employed to ones TV set.  Also, antenna aiming of just one to two degrees can and will make a big difference in receiving HD over-the-air.  As far as the break ups on TWC, I am not sure what to make of it other than if the signal is weak to the TWC STB this will occur as well, which when adding Road Runner and other various STB's in a home system and not the right type of amplifier, breakups will occur, which I to have experienced in the past until my system was modified correctly.   I suspect that these break ups mentioned above are not due to the multicasts but rather due to the antenna and cabling system employed.  And to support that fact we have received numerous e-mails and feedback on how well the HD and SD games worked this year.

If you would like to dialogue further about your systems we would be more than happy to provide assistance.
