Discovery Plans High-Definition Channel

Discovery Communications Inc., owner of the Discovery Channel on cable TV, said it's starting a digital cable network that will offer 24-hour programming with high-definition picture quality. The new network, called Discovery HD Theater, will begin service on June17 on digital cable and satellite-TV systems.

Great info.  I wonder how long it will take Time Warner to carry this on their network?

Quoting from the press release: "The HDTV digital signal will be delivered in 1080i high-definition resolution and will utilize 3 MHz of spectrum."

Doesn't sound good to me.

That has to be a mis-print. Didnt Jim Hall say that the CBS OTA signal is only 6-8 MHz? That is the bare minimum for HD I think you can get away with.
I think DirecTv gives like 19 MHz to HD stations. Thats why we are seeing artifacts on OTA sports (Olympics) and not HDNet.
I am sure someone can chime in that is more versed in this subkect than me.

Below is the email reply I received today from DirecTV's customer service regarding their plans to broadcast Discovery HD Theater.

"Thank you for your interest in high definition programming. We hope to
be able to offer Discovery Channel programming in high definition.
However, as it is DIRECTV policy not to disclose information about
upcoming programming until it is officially announced, we do not have a
date when we can expect it at this time. Please continue to visit our

service."
