So I finally got around to hooking up a phone line to my receiver and tested it. The message on the screen says I need to subscribe to caller ID from the phone company. I already have caller ID. What else do I need to do to get this to work?

steve053

Did you test the line w/ a phone that is known to work with caller id?

Yes ran the line from the same phone that has caller ID

Try a menu reset.  I know that sometimes my caller-id goes "missing" and a soft reset fixes it.  Some have speculated that improperly grounded dishes are a (if not "the") problem for caller-id troubles.  That being said, I have never heard of your specific problem.

Which box do you have?

I have an HR-21 now, I will admit the Caller ID is one function of the box that annoy's me.

It works for a while then it doesn't. I have to go back into the setup menu and turn it back on. Give that a shot and see what happens.

Every once in a while I get the same message.

I have the latest CE and it was supposed to be one of the fixes, Not this time.

My H20's work just fine, never a problem with it on those.

Sorry the response is so late - had to actaully interact with the family last night. :D

I have the HR20 so am not 100% sure that the HR21 menu is the same, but it should be pretty close.

From menu > Set-up > Reset > Restart

The receiver restart will not erase your saved programs or rest your settings to default.  It will gracefully shut down the receiver and restart.

I have the HR21.  I will try the reset when I get home tonite.

Thanks I'll let you know the results as soon as I try it.

Well one down and one to go. My H21 (non-dvr) set now works after the reset.  The HR21 is isn't responding at all.  I need to spend some time checking the telephone wires to the HR21 but gotta find some time to do it. So much to do, so little time to do it!  Thanks for the tip!

Success!!!   I checked the HR-21 and saw that there was 3 calls but the notification was turned off. Turn it on and all is well! (It wasn't turned off before). Now if I can only get the networking of the DVR to work. But that's another thread, Thanks for all the help!!

Glad you got it working.

As for networking, if you can easily run Cat5, that would be the "easiest" method.

Agreed. The HR21 is nice because the second port on the back is a pass-through. I already had Cat5 running to my HT to service my PS3. Instead of having to run a second cable, I just moved the cable from the PS3 to the HR21's port #1, and used a short cable to go from the HR21 port 2 to the PS3. Works like a charm!

Or you could add a cheap 4 port switch.  Then you'd have 2 open ports for the next web enabled piece of AV gear.

Can I run the Cat5 from my wireless router thereby having a wired connection? Or can you not mix wired and wireless on the same router? I'm new to networking so I haven't a clue. I'd rather run it wired as I hear this is better for ON Demand.

If your wireless routher has an ethernet port(s), then absolutely.

I have a wireless linksys routher w/ 4 ports.  I have the router hardwired to two switches in the "office" for various computers and printers that are networked.  I have a wireless buffalo router hacked to act as a wireless bridge.  The buffalo bridge is in the living room for the HR20 and my A3.  DOD (at least the SD material) is just fine over wireless.
