Are any stations going back to VHF next year?

What the topic says.  I was under the impression only 10 (aka 8) is going to be VHF after the digital change over is finally over.  Is that true, or are some of the other channels getting another transmitter and going back to VHF?

Channel 41 WMLW is currently on VHF 13, but is considered LPTV.  Don't know how much longer they will remain on 58-2, but they are on both locations now.

So to answer you question there are 2 VHF hi-band channel for the milwaukee area right now.

Its my understanding that many of the VHF analog stations who are broadcasting in digital on UHF perfer to stay on UHF. Not exactly sure why other then maybe avoid those summertime atmospheric conditions. Besides they would have to dish out additional funds to convert over.  At one time the FCC was going to auction off the lower VHF-TV band, but I guess they have decided not to.

I think at anytime in the future, if WTMJ-DT decides later on to move to VHF they maybe able to move ch. 28 to ch. 4, providing the allocation is still there.

Its my understanding that the only TV station in Milwaukee to move thier digital to their current analog channel would be WVTV, ch. 18 because UHF channels 50 and over will be auctioned off by the FCC in about 2 years.  WVTV's current digital is on 61 and they will have to move it to a channel under 50. So in this case they decide to best use 18 in this matter.

Actually the new core spectrum is 2-51.  With that said it is pretty well etched in stone were the stations are right now.  It would take an act of congress for WTMJ to move back to channel 4 now.  They will be on 28 for the long haul now.

As far as low band goes digital is not suited real well for that band due to impulse noise causing drop outs.    I believe the most sought after band right now is the VHF hi band (7-13).  Costs a lot less money to transmit on this band than UHF as far as electrical consumption is concerned.  It is also not nearly as critical for line of sight than the UHF band either, nor is it affected by vegation as bad either.

Anyway hope that helps;)
