What timing. :)

Now that RR is in the process of capping users.

So, where is this service exactly?

Edit:

Found it:

Bluto

So, I'm confused.  Do I need to have both RoadRunner and HBO, like LuckySe7en's link indicated?  Or, just one of the other, like the first link stated?

LuckySe7ens

As I've read elsewhere, and on the official site, you need both.

Looks like I'm screwed.. I'm running Vista x64.

LuckySe7ens

Same here... but my hopes were even more far fetched.

My laptop runs the Kubuntu distro of Linux.

I use Wine to run Windows programs, and Wine doesn't seem to like the setup for the program.

As a failsafe, I have Vmware with a Windows 2000 installation -- guess what, doesn't work under Windows 2000 either.

I am tempted to just download a copy of XP and run it in Vmware, but hard drive space is a premium. :huh?:

Wow, so they require you to run some special application?  It will be interesting to see how many users have problems with the application (proprietary programs generally have a larger number of problems).  It would have been nice if they used a popular codec that supports DRM then no special program would be required and it would work on any platform that supports the codec.

The roadrunner requirement also needs to be dropped.  If I am at home, I am most likely going to watch TV on the TV.  But streaming over the internet would be nice while traveling.  However, there is no telling who the service provider would be while traveling.

As it stands now, I am definitely out.  I subscribe to HBO but I get internet from uverse and run Ubuntu Linux on my laptop.  I have no problems streaming content from other sites, but the limitations with this service will prevent me from using it.

Out for me also,

I see this as a novelty and a gimmick.  The need to download additional software to run the service is a negative.  (Yes I have RR, Digital Phone, and Cable)  But the main thing is, it's too uncomfortable to sit in front of my computer monitor for two hours to watch a movie, or whatever when I can do it on a big screen TV in greater comfort.

Yeah, I see it as more of a laptop on the road kinda thing -- that's how it'd be successful

I installed it on an XP computer and just took a quick glance at it.. it's pointless.  Looks like mostly everything on there you can get on the on demand channel.  The only thing it would good for is on the road, like others have said.

Agreed,

I got an installation CD in the mail the other day.  (It's the same as the download applet on the site)  unless you're on the road with a laptop, I don't see the point to it.

While it sucks you have to install more software, I tried it out and it seems ok. Setup is easy, PQ is decent and dl'ing is fairly quick. You can start watching while your downloading. It could be better, but for free I can't complain.

Every episode of Entourage is up right now and that's a really good thing you can't get OnDemand.

I managed to get it to install in Linux with Wine by installing IE 5 in Wine (OldVersion.com),  and then by installing the .Net 2.0 framework in Wine.

But when I tried to run the installed program, I get the following:

err:wineboot:ProcessWindowsFileProtection WFP: L"urlmon.dll" error 0x7
err:wineboot:ProcessWindowsFileProtection WFP: L"wininet.dll" error 0x7
err:wineboot:ProcessWindowsFileProtection WFP: L"shlwapi.dll" error 0x7

Anyone smarter than myself have any clue what it means?

If you mean IE 5 as in Internet Explorer 5, my guess is that is way way too old for this software.  For Windows, you would need updated IE 6 or IE 7, or get Firefox 2.0.  I am not familar with Linix though
