This snow is so heavy and sticky it has obliterated my dish to the point I can't get a signal. I never thought I would be saying that. This has only happened to me once before a few years ago when I had D* before.

Good thing it is only 6 feet off the ground so I can access it easily.

The last time this happended, my dish was on the roof and I used a hose to wash all the snow off of it, rather then climb up and play Everest risking my life (note: the tip here).

OK TWC, you get proven right ONCE.

Yup, same here.  Had to pull out the 6 foot ladder and broom.  First time that has ever happend to me - and I've had DirecTv here since 7/2001.

I too have snow build up on my dish. The regular channels come in, but HD no luck. My dish is too high to reach by ladder and broom, if I pull out the hose and clean it off, will ice have any effect considering it is not suppossed to get above 30 today?

1st time in 10 years I had this problem

When I had Directv from '96  to '03 I had it happen to me twice, first with snow and then an ice storm which knocked out my service completely until later on in the day (the sun came out).
In the future, once I can swing the Directv lease setup prices, I will find a location in my  back yard for the dish on a pole I can reach, not two stories up on a roof!:D

It is supposed to get to 30 tomorrow. With a little sun that might melt the snow off. Otherwise washing it off with a hose will be OK. The water is warm enough that most of it will evaporate and not really ice up the dish. The trick is to try to not use too much and get the roof totally soaked. Hopefully the stream is strong enough to reach the dish.

This is still a hassle, but is at least a safe alternative to going up on the roof.

The new dish is a lot more sensitive. It does have 5 LNBs.

I'm seriously considering a heater.

In the fall every year, I spray PAM on mine and haven't had an issue with the snow sticking to it.

Well, my dish is a lot higher than 6 feet.  It is on the roof of a two story.  So.... I am out in the snow uncovering my garden hose. (I know the neighbors have to be watching me again).  Now, I would not have been doing this had the weather guy not been lying about the sun we were supposed to have on Sunday..... but that is another story.

Finally after thawing out the hose in a basement tub, getting a ladder and going too high up on it I was finally able to get enough water on the dish to have the transponders all clicking away very happily for the Bowl games these next two days.

I could never go on the roof because I am only coming down one of two ways.  Either Max McGee or the Fire Dept.

No, the ice will not have that much effect.  I did it yesterday, ladder, garden hose, feeling stupid, but it was warmer.  Good luck and be careful on that ladder.  If your water pressure is anything like mine you have to get pretty high to lob the water (downwind) onto the dish.

Someone should start a de-icing service for dishes. :)

We lost signal during the main part of the storm, but never went up to touch the dish.  It came back after the heavy wet stuf stopped falling so hard.  Still have a little snow on my dish.  Not causing any problems.
