I couldn't help but notice all the posters in the Packers/Cowboys thread which were unhappy with Bryant Gumbel's play by play.  I was spared from him because AM620 actually had their radio broadcast in perfect sync with WISN12's HD OTA broadcast.  This is my second NFL season with an HDTV and this is the first time where an ESPN or NFL network game, passed through to local OTA HDTV, was actually synced with the radio.  WTMJ does a great job syncing Wayne and Larry to FOX and CBS broadcasts, but last year's NFL network and Monday night game, as well as this year's Monday nighter (against the Broncos) had the radio broadcast 4.5 seconds ahead of the local OTA HD signal.
I heard in the past that WTMJ was syncing radio to TWC's digital SD channel which always seemed to be dead even with the OTA HD signal, except for the Monday and Thursday night games.  Do we have any WTMJ insiders here that know which broadcast they are now using as a point of reference for the radio?  If they are switching to the OTA HD signal it's much appreciated!

Hmm that's interesting, I wished I thought about turning on the radio and forget about NFL broadcast.

620AM used to run an ad telling their listeners to muting their TV and listen to their Packers broadcast.

I wonder if that makes the advetisers on television angry, that you can't hear there comercials.

Gumbel is absolutely horrible.  He couldn't even get the teams straight.  Calling the Packers the Cowboys and the Cowboys the Packers.  Collinsworth gets on my nerves but for the most part he knows what he's talking about.

The NFLN gave up a lot of cash to keep the Thursday night games for themselves.  You would think they would fork out some cash and get a top notch play by play guy.

I don't really like their pregame either but it is kind of cool that they can be down on the field before the game.

Its the sound of his voice that really drove me crazy.  It was like the muppet "Kermit the frog" was talking.  I was going to start a thread complaining they had the muppet show audio with the game but we have already said enough about Bry-ant Gumball.

Bryant Gumbel's brother Greg would be a MUCH needed improvment. I haven't heard a more obnoxious announcer since Howard Cosell, and at least Howard didn't constantly make mistakes. Count me in as well as one not missing NFL Network on TWC because of the aloof and mistake-prone Bryant 'Stumble'  :o

I dont know how many games the NFL network does each year.  It sure sounded like the first game of preseason as far as the announcers went.  Bryant wasn't obnoxious in the way Howard Cosell was.  He just made a ton of mistakes, didn't click with Cris Collinsworth (often responded to Cris' comment with something totally unrelated) and in general was bland.

I used to put on the excellent Packers radio network years ago and mute the TV announcers.  THis has become much harder to do in recent years with various delays (i.e. the TV feed being 1- 2 seconds behind the radio broadcast, which is irritating). Now even worse with HD where there is about a 5s delay.

As my original post stated, AM620 has been out of sync with the OTA HD signal only once this season - the monday night game against the Broncos.  All others have been perfect.

My neighbor is an engineer at TMJ, and he told me that they are trying to sync the broadcast audio on AM620 to the TV broadcasts.  It seems to be fairly good recently, but I didn't find out the reference they use for the timing delay.

I, for one, really dislike the TV announcers approach to the games.  I want to hear details of the plays, not idle chatter and celebrity visit interviews.  If I can't hear the radio broadcast, I would rather just watch the video than listen to that pompous John Madden!

So using TW QAM directv into my tv to watch the games, do you guys think I would be able to listen to 620 and watch it in sync? If so I am going to be a happy happy man and put a tuner in my living room TODAY..

I should have known better than to shoot my mouth off about WTMJ's great radio syncing this season, because now I'm eating me words with amplitude modulation all over them.  I should have seen this coming, the radio for today's game was a full 4.5 seconds behind the OTA HD broadcast for the entire game.  I guess it could have been worse, the radio being ahead of the TV ruins everything.  Thanks WTMJ!

Well I dragged my receiver back out (my yamaha dsp has no tuner), hooked it up, hooked up the speakers. Got super pumped. Low and behold I can barely tune any am stations. I tried about 4 different antennas and wires etc. When I did get 620 there was tremendous interference :(  DAMNIT. So then I try using my sirius, unfortunatly it is about 5 seconds or so behind. So no luck. I am going to keep trying to work out the AM situation. I dont know why it is such an issue in my house...

Is there some trick to pulling in AM decently? Works awesome in the car, and probably even our boombox..
