First of all, "DTV" in forums like this one refer to DTV as Digital Television.
D* means Directv
E* means Dishnetwork

Gotcha.  Sorry, still learning the lingo.  I just read that Echostar is now officially known as Dish Network.

I'll try to find somebody that has D* and a HD TV and check it out.  Regardless, the amount of HD stations has me itching to switch.

No worries, this renaming of Echostar to Dishnetwork is a reality that many embraced sometime ago (no one really ever called it "Echostar" except investors).
The whole D* and E* thing were common forum abbreviations, that''s all.;)

Its just that DTV has always meant Digital TeleVision, as what you get when you use a digital tuner (now in all new TV sets required by law) to get digital TV - OTA (Over The Air, with an antenna), including HD.

Based on my most recent experiences, Directv (D*) really is great, now that they have added all those HD channels and the MPEG-4 delivery used is very clear and sharp.
Remember, while some of the newer HD channels Directv now offers are not always offering HD programming:
There was no place before this HD channel was up and running to put any HD programmes, so now there is and HD programming will increase over time on these channels.;)

A few Dishnet folks complain to me about "HD Lite" on Dishnet, similar to what Directv used to have on with all its HD channels, until recently.
Remember, too, that Dishnet doesn't offer any HD locals or some other HD/SD channels that D* does offer, too:
So some of these Dishnet subs are switching to D*, now.

But whatever your selection, remember the following:
1) What is important to you for HD channels as to selection.
2) How you will watch HD programming (recording it, surfing channels, OTA for HD locals, etc.).

-I would really advise checking out a store that has a more direct hookup (meaning fewer) Directv hookups to their HDTV(s) than some others for best picture.
This I think could really help you out if you cannot find a friend for relative that has a DirectvHD or DishHD setup with a HDTV setup (done correctly, of course).:D
