TWC Picture quality

I'm basically happy with TWC/HD but I really have no choice other than cable due to the topography around my house.

That being said why are all of my channels sharp and clear except FOX News and some of the other channels in the 30-50 range such as USA and SciFi and etc. Their picture quality sucks. I have a newer SONY WEGA 36" HDTV. TWC says they only feed what they get so it isn't their problem. Any help here??

Thanx

Greg

The primary problem is likely because these are analog feeds and your TV is good enough to expose how bad of a signal the analog is. I don't know if TWC can improve this, you might just have to upgrade to digital cable or put up with it.

I have the Digital package.

TW digital cable still passes through analog feeds for some channels. Therin lies the problem and there's nothing you can do about it except switch providers.

You may want to check your leads and the connections from the source to your tv, including your vcr, cable box.Make sure they are tight. Also see if a straight lead to your tv helps it may isolate the problem... It may isolate the problem as a crappy signal also...

This worked for me a while back. I found a bad cable between the vcr and tv.

Even with Digital Cable, the channels between your top local and channel 100 are being passed through in analog. The bigger the TV, the worse the picture quality is.

I watch a lot of Fox News, and at a time that I had both I was able to compare them back and forth on the same TV. The difference between DirecTV and Cable was stunning. It was one of the main reasons I switched to DirecTV.

Ask TWC to do   a signal to noise ratio check  at your location. Whenever you perceive a reception problem  call TWC first. It's free,  Snowy cable reception is a major  problem with  analog cable.

I felt kinda bad because the TWC guys did come out because I was complaining so much about the inferior picture. The difference in PQ between cable and D* was obvious, especially because we could switch back and forth to compare. So it was like throwing down the gauntlet. They knew that it had to be an internal wiring issue because it was a brand new subdivision with Fiber almost to my terminal and TWC Digital cable HAD to be better than satellite. They spent well over an hour testing signal strengths, adding amplifiers, and rerunning cable and putting in and taking out splitters, and they got it as good as they could and it was still not even close.

And then to add insult to injury, I asked them if they had ever seen HiDef (this was before Time Warner carried any HD). They said they hadn't seen it, but they heard it was no great shakes, and no better than their Digital channels. So I flipped over to the PBS demo reel on 10-1 and they were just floored, and knew that they were going to have to change their stories from that point on.

No way should you have felt even kinda bad. They need that kick in the pants throughout their system on a regular basis.  cistinebiggrinA

To me the best reception mode is a good outdoor OTA antenna . It beats cable  and any compressed digital system. Cable has the problem because Fiber on analog has a low signal to noise ratio. They just can't feed enough light through fiber optical cable to give a high signal to noise ratio it suffers from what is called shot noise, and that is what you see on your display, mixing with the video.
On the the other hand digital suffers from artifacts that are generated by the digital compression  process that is why it's called lossy compression for what it removes to cut the data rate. What you see in the compressed digital form and compare with the original analog video I think the difference would be readily apparent to any observer. there are   other factors  involved but won't get into
but let me make one final point there is no perfect way to distribute a multichannel medium enviorment that is perfect.

So what you're saying then is after Feb 2009 when analog goes away my picture will be great??!!!

Why can't TWC go to an all digital format like Cox Cable has done?

Because digital isn't perfect either

Cable has until 2012 to switch everything to digital.  I assume they'll gradually drop analog channels until then so they can free up bandwidth for HD channels.  We can only hope.

There's probably not enough bandwidth to have analog and digital side by side for those channels.  Plus there are still people without boxes or some that only have 1-2 boxes with the rest of the TVs directly connected to the coax.  I don't think TWC is ready to roll out boxes for every TV connected to their system.  I'm sure customers aren't willing to pay either.
