HDMI Handshake Issue?

I recently purchased the Onkyo TX-SR805 and now when I connect my Denon 1910 DVD player into it through a DVI to HDMI cable the player freezes.  The only way to correct it is to turn off the player.  If I run in component cables to the receiver, it works fine.  Is there some compatibility issue that I am missing.  I have heard about the HDMI handshake, but mainly as a problem pertaining to cable/satellite boxes.  Is it some issue with a particular DVI to HDMI cable?
