I am buying a new TV for my mother-in-law to put in her new house.  Now in her move she is switching from TWC to Charter.

Do you know if Charter broadcasts the locals in unencrypted QAM in Oconomowoc?

Also is Charter going to use Switched Digital Video at all.  If I look for the TV with cable-card will it be a waste of time and money?

Thanks.

Have no fear...
I'd bet the farm that locals being in-the-clear is an FCC requirement.
IMO, if she doesn't need/want the interactive guide, pay-per view, VOD or DVR, a cablecard would be a good choice for your in-law.  That way she can use all the functions of the new TV and have one less remote laying around...  then her son-in-law could buy her a premium package for Christmas without any wiring hassle !! :D
Down the road, she could always upgrade ( ) to a set top when/if switched is deployed.  I doubt a cable card slot adds a ton of money to the cost of a newer TV anymore...

Well in the end I bought a set without cable-card.  The sets in the price range I was looking in did not have them anyway.  Got her a Sony KDL-40V3000.  Its very nice much better than my crappy Toshiba RPTV.  I'm jealous.

The cable-card may still be an option for her bedroom set that she wants to get and mount on the wall.  I'm currently drooling over a 32inch Sharp 1080p for that but she only wants somthing like a 26 inch.  Oh well....
