Last night I watched the pack on my new 32 inch LCD.  It was on WTMJ's HD channel.  I noticed that it seemed to be broadcast in 4:3 and not 16:9.  I may have not had my new LCD setup correctly, so I wanted to ask if some HD is broadcast in 4:3.  It seems weird to me if that is the case.  Any comments or info are appreciated.
Thanks,
Pat

The preseason games are only broadcast on the state network, not by NBC. The regular season games will be in full 16:9 HD glory.

Last nights game wasn't in HD, none of the "local" preseason games were.

Not everything on WTMJ's digital channel is in HD. Quite a few programs are still transmitted in 480i (standard definition) and in 4:3 aspect ratio, including the Packer game. The same holds true with just about all digital channels.

Basically, if it's in 4:3, it's not HD. (More basically - you'll easily be able to tell the difference between HD and SD. It's kind of hard to miss.)

That's usually the case, but not always true.  Exceptions would be material that was originally shot in 4x3 and later remastered in HD.  Some examples are The Wizard of Oz, Robin Hood, the original Star Trek series.

The Packer game was in SD, though.

Unfotunately most of your games will be on FOX so your HD glory is a bit low level.

CBS has the most awesome HD football games :guitar:

Is that right??

Who see's more motion artifacts on CBS 1080i than Fox's 720p??

I know I do!

I'll take football in 720p any time.

Ditto.

Although it would be nice to compare 1080i football to 720p football if bandwidth weren't being sucked out of the 1080i version due to multi-casting.

The NFL Network is 1080i, and some have said that their games (and the CBS-originated games they rebroadcast) are the best looking football on TV.

Good point.  It would be nice if those of us who are HD-OTA-only would get the chance to see the games to their best advantage.
