QuoteWAYNE, N.J. -- Amazon.com has selected Toshiba's new assortment of third generation HD DVD players as one of their top picks for the upcoming holiday season -- the new models were highlighted at the Amazon.com Electronics store Holiday Preview this week where Amazon showcased their picks for this season's hottest holiday products.

With the majority market share in unit sales of next generation DVD players, consumers are speaking loud and clear, and they are adopting HD DVD with its innovative interactivity and web enabled features as their HD format of choice. With all three new third generation models priced under $500, Toshiba is delivering a powerful line-up of HD DVD players designed to meet the aggressive growth in demand for high definition TVs.

Being the owner of a first generation HD DVD player it is nice to see some positive press regarding HD DVD. Everything has been about Bluray. Being an early adaptor has its advantages but also carries some risk. In the case of this format war I have to remind myself that this battle is going to be a marathon and not a sprint.

With the now affordable prices of HD DVD I am really getting tempted but I can't justify getting into this race until the final lap:(

Prices for 2nd gen players have been as low as $199 recently.  Plus, you get 5 free HD DVDs with purchases through the end of September.  Considering that any of the Toshibas do a really good job of upconverting and Blockbuster Online and Netflix both offer HD DVD rentals via mail service - it's a really good time to buy without much risk.

Of course, if you wait, you might get a third gen player for the same price, but you're missing out on what's available right now.  ;)

I know, I've been on the fence myself for a long time.  This has sooo been said before, but what I care about is the titles as opposed to the format.  I happen to only have Blu disks right now cuz I have a PS3 and love it, but when I look at titles coming to HD DVD only like Star Trek TOS season 1 (which looks like it will cost almost as much as the player !!!! ) I betcha I get a 3rd gen HD DVD player in Nov/Dec.  Right now I haven't seen any HD DVD format only titles that cause me to want to get a machine before then.

My TV is 720p native, and I haven't been all that impressed with the PS3 upconverting, so I'm not looking to a HD DVD player for that functionality, but then I think when I upgrade the TV ( and I like 'em big and I like to sit close ) that upconverting may matter more in the future.

For me, it is actually more a matter of rack space and maxed out input jacks than cost of the player that has held me back!! Already have all kinds of switch boxes :D

But I agree with the original poster, we live in exciting times!

I have a 1st gen and a 2nd gen. I guess I might as well go for the trifecta.

Actually I'd prefer a really nice universal player instead. Come on Pioneer, embrace HD DVD as well!!!

I think that by next spring  Iwill have adopted HD-DVD as  the format for my household, I find it interesting how many people I know who own PS3's, but don't own a HDTV, or own a small HDTV.

Although SONY, has gotten a momentary boost to their BR disk sales, It will be interesting to see if it continues.  How many of the PS3 owners will continue to buy BR movies, and how many of the PS3's are connected to TVs that can truely take advantage of the format.

I'm still pretty much on the fence about this. I'm leaning more toward HD-DVD then Bluray but it's so hard to decided on which one will be "the one". I hate to spend $200 on a HD-DVD player just to find that next year, it's out and Bluray is the one of choice. I think I will try to hold out until Xmas and see if anything changes.
