HDTV from cable to my antenna input

My neighbor bought a new 46 inch Philips DLP HDTV and we hooked up his cable straight into his tv (no hdtv box). He picked up all the locals in HD so i tried it with another one of my neighbors on his 50 inch plasma and it worked. I have an HD box (Pace DC551P) and i split the signal going to it and ran the other cable to my antenna input (my tv has a built in tuner). I only seem to be picking up WTMJ in HD and nothing else. Is this because i am splitting the signal?. And is there also a website where i can see the OTA channel numbers?. Im pretty new to the OTA thing so any news is appreciated.

Tom Snyder

The OTA channels are found on our home page.

I'll let someone here with cable address the other issues.

Note that HDTVs can have up to 4 video tuners, mostly all different.

Many new HDTV units have two Analog tuners (NSTC) for Pic in Pic.
This basic tuner is required for both roof Antenna analog & Cable analog
     programs.

Most now have a HDTV roof (OTA) antenna Digital tuner (ASTC).

A few more have a (QAM) cable digital tuner for Cable Card use
and reception of Unscrambled digital STD DEF & HD cable Programs.

If you hookup the RF cables correctly & have the listed TV tuners
preinstalled in your HDTV set....   THe proper channel scan and good
antenna aim direction, U will locate the TV transmissions in your area.

I have yet to see an HDTV with a Sattellite Tuner installed internally.

i think i answered my own question, i believe my model does not have a QAM tuner in it so thats why im not getting the other locals in HD but my neighbors are because they have QAM tuners in their tvs.

So a raw cable plugged into a QAM tuner will give you HD locals even without a Cable Card?

Yes - only those that are not encrypted by the cable company.

And I hear cable companies are required to send the locals unencrypted, so the answer to Tom's question is yes.

However, when using a QAM tuner the HD channel locations are very odd.  i.e some are 0.512, others are in the 116.xx range (from memory -- could be wrong).

Anyone have a full list of all TWC HD channel locations when using a QAM tuner?

I can come up with that this evening... the HDHomeRun box that I have makes it fairly easy.

gcarnachan

so i should technically be getting all the locals in HD without a QAM tuner?. I do receive wtmj on 1-4 but i dont get the others. And with a QAM tuner they are in odd locations, i beleive CBS is 0.512 i cante remember the others though.

Here's what I found on my quick scan through (numbers in parenthesis are the channel numbers when using a cable box):

79.10 - TW One (1)
90.40 - WTMJ SDTV (4)
91.3 - Wisconsin on Demand preview channel
91.60 - WITI SDTV (6)
92.13 - Answers on Demand preview channel
101.4 - On Demand preview channel
103.1 - WTMJ DT (505)
103.2 - WITI DT (506)
103.15 - Weather Plus (104)
106.10 - WDJT SDTV (5)
109.5 - WDJT DT (505)
109.12 - WISN DT (512)
109.41 - WMLW (7)
111.7 - WHA (559)
111.10 - Time Warner Promotions
113.20 - MusicChoice Adult Alternative (918)
116.1 - MPTV HD (510)
116.2 - MPTV Later (550)
116.3 - MPTV2 Later (551)
116.4 - MPTV Kids (552)
116.5 - MPTV Create (553)
116.6 - MPTV Extra (554)

113.20 is a fluke, I think.... none of the other channels were sent in the clear. Additionally, I found some program on 85.60 that I didn't recognize, but when I went back to watch it for longer, the program cut out. (I'm sure there are probably more like this that are sent intermittently in the clear.)

You are very right - I missed the word local ;)

I also remember hearing a rumor that if you order something from HD-PPV OnDemand, it'll show up as an open QAM channel once you start playing it. But I didn't just say that. :p

This thread finally pushed me to tap into the cable I have in my house for Road Runner.  Up till now I have been using an antenna.  Worked out well.  The channel listing was helpful although it may be slightly out of date with some signals coming through on different channel locations.

One particular problem I am having is that I do not get any of the Milwaukee PBS digital channels. :bang:   Anyone else have this problem?

greenskingIV

I just got my new set last Thursday and plugged in my cable and I am getting an HBO channel. I have standard cable no digital package. I hope it stays on there for a while.
