TWC has no excuse, just their usual non-caring, having been around so long when they pull this, but I would give AT&T some room, at least for now, IMO.;)

I agree and have cut them some slack.  I eventually did get that call and am scheduled for installation on Tuesday afternoon.     I will, of course, report my initial impressions after that.  I'm so glad that there is an alternative to TWC.  Satelite was never an option for me because of all of the trees around our neighborhood.

gparris

Well I hope it all goes well and you have positive spin on it.:)

TWC needs it to get its act together with more HD channels and this could be a catalyst for it...good luck!

Came out this morning for the install.  It took most of the day because my phone line was disconnected at the pole since I didn't have an active land line.  We had to wait for a different tech to get that fixed which probably added 3-4 hours.  Not a big deal as all is working now.  No major issues so far except for the 1 HD stream limit for 3 HDTV's.

Great to hear it.

I suppose you really hate all those HD channels you are getting, too (ha ha).:D

Let us all know how it goes with the recordings, service and channels over time.

e-man's experience will be valuable, too, soon...thanks to you both!

Quick question:

Does the u-verse internet service block ports??

I ask because sometimes I do web development, and I really enjoy doing my web development on my computers here and then asking my clients to review the work by browsing in...

I also run my personal e-mail server at home (yes, Im a geek)..

So far, RoadRunner has been pretty good for that, and no ports are blocked...  This makes it possible for me to do these things...

Nooo, before you ask, Im not hosting commercial web sites or creating spam lists or any of that...

Anyhow, if u-verse blocks incoming ports 25 or 80, then I might reconsider subscribing to their internet services (when it does eventually become available to me)...

So, does anyone know about this?

The DSL services included in Uverse work the same as normal AT&T DSL services.

I think that's another issue holding them back. This is FIBER... give us FIBER speeds! They'd be stealing Road Runner customers left & right (or at least a lot more) if their speed was at least double what we have now, for a competitive price.

kjnorman

But its not fiber.  It is fiber to the node (their big green boxes they are putting up neighborhoods) but after that it is plain old telephone copper to the home. ..

Is that the same thing Verizon FIOS is doing?

But remember they have some good package speeds...the top speed for Uverse DSL is 6mbs down and 1mbs up.

No. FIOS actually runs the fiber all the way to a fiber conversion and breakout box right at the home.

The other big difference between FIOS and U-Verse is that FIOS carries the television as RF over Fiber, I believe, while U-Verse carries the television as IP data packets. This means FiOS has no limitation on number of HD streams into the home, while U-Verse is limited by bandwidth and latency on the last mile of copper.

There's really no argument - FiOS definitely costs Verizon more, but it is by far and away the better technology. Fiber to the node, as U-Verse uses, is really only a budget decision on the part of AT&T.

Just got U300 package with HD and Pro Internet services installed today.  So far, so good.  It still took the installer about 4 hours from start to finish even though I already had Cat 5e run to all the locations.

See the attached image for a quick snapshot of the 2Wire RG stats:

Maybe it takes awhile to set it up because you have more than one HD box with one HD DVR and the network they setup so any box at the premises can work with the recordings.
Thanks for the input on the AT&T setup and service...keep us all posted.:)

I had my install today as well.  It took about 7 hours from start to finish.  Same problems as someone mentioned above.  Line had been disconnected for tw phone service.  HOWEVER, the reps were fantastically nice and kept me informed the whole time what was going on.  Very refreshing to get someone like that.

So, with a couple of hours into the service, I'm very impressed with the channel selection (didn't know we'd get ch's 18 & 24 in HD as well).  I'll keep everyone posted.  I just set up some recordings.

SD channels for me are much much better than what I was getting with TW.

Technically that is not true.  RR may not block the ports you're interested in but they certainly block ports that most ISPs do for file and printer sharing over the network (135, 139, 445, etc).  This is why most people can't "Map Network Drives" on their home computers in the same fashion they do when they are at work.  Again, it's not a knock on RR because most everyone does it and it's a security issue.  I'm just another geek straightening out the facts :D
