i can't figure out how to switch video source with the synergy remote provided by time warner cable. i've a sony kdl-40v2500.  can anyone help?

Did you find a code that worked to turn your TV on and off?  This needs to happen first.  If you have a working code, then you need to "map" the video source button to the TV input.  I think this is done by pressing video source and select together until the cable button lights up or flashes or something, then press the TV button.  I'll go look in my remote manual and post back if I've givent he wrong key combo.
