i am thinking of switching from charter to a dish. mostly its because we pay over 100 dollars for cable and internet, and we can get dsl for under 20 dollars from verizon, and satellite shouldn't be more than 50 or so a month.

i am leaning towards dish because they have the two-room boxes. we have a wall-mounted lcd tv in our bedroom, and there isn't a good spot for a box. there are doors on both sides of the wall the tv is on, so to put the box somewhere else and run cable would mean going through the basement, and the basement has a finished drywall ceiling, so it would be a big project.

we need a dvr, so i think the only box available would be the 942. according to dish, i can get one for 200 dollars, but i would have to sign an 18 month contract, and whenever i cancel i have to return the box. or, i can buy a box on my own and sign up for month to month service. i would much rather go month to month, so i need to buy a box, i think. they sell them on ebay for around 200, but i'm not sure what i need to know about the box to make sure it will work for me. also, i seem to remember that there was some change in technology coming, something about mpeg, and that these boxes might be absolete. is that happening soon?

i would appreciate greatly people's help on this.
thanks

I was thinking of going with the VIP622 - which I think will do what you want.  This is an HD DVR - but it is only HD for the TV that it is connected to.

One thing you may want to consider is I've heard they are giving that away for free come Feb 1st.

Technically you can connect 622 with two HDTVs using component and HDMI outputs. They work at the same time. So you will be able to watch HD on both TVs but it will be the same channel. If you want two different channels then the second TV has to be restricted to SD feed.
So if you connect both HDMI(component) and SD feed (coax cable) to TV2 then you can watch HD (the same channel as TV1) or another channel in SD by switching inputs on TV2.Glug2

If you cannot get cables to the flat panel on the wall how will you get the HD signal from the 622 receiver to your tv because you need more than just a coax if thats all you have?

I could, because my second HDTV (projector) is in the basement and I have recessed ceiling:-)
If you will feed coax to the flat panel, why not to feed HDMI cable at the same time.
Another alternative - wait one - three years for wireless HD. It is coming:-)

I think the confusion came from the first post was from tnichols.  But the post you were replying to was by AndrewP.  Had me confused too for a while until I noticed that ;)
