So I called Dish to investigate switching from TWC and the bill will be about $40 less per month.  Here is the catch,  they indicate I need a phone line to connect into the box.  I currently have VOIP with AT&T and I do not use the standard phone jacks.  The rep at Dish said it doesn't matter, they can still connect into the inactive phone jacks and it would work.  Can anyone corroborate this story?  I am thinking she didn't know any better

No, you should connect to the active line.
Good news, it works fine with VOIP.
You will need some kind of adapter, I don't know what you have with ATT.
I have Sunrocket service and it has standard phone jacks.
I just disconnected ATT line from the outside and connected the Sunrocket modem to one of the phone jacks and have signal everywhere in the house.

I also have VOIP(Lingo) service and Dish Network. All my old phone jacks are still live, and I just plug the Dish phone connection into one. The Lingo adapter box connects to my phone jack. Your ATT service doesn't use any phone jack?

Skip the phone lines.  Hook it up like he says, and then ignore it later.  Worst case is they charge you $5 monthly fee for not having a phone line.  I have 4 receivers, and have never had a phone hooked up to any of them.  Never paid that fee that they say they charge either.  Maybe I'm legacy or something.  YMMV.

Pay per View and whatnot.....they need to know what you watch and the dish is only a receiver.

The other use of the phone line is to help insure that one account doesn't have multiple receivers in different households.
