What in the world is this new addition to our electric pole?

Sorry the photos are a bit blurry since I just shot them and it was dark out (taking flash pictures outside at 12am, our neighbors probably think we're crazy)... I could take some more tomorrow if clearer photos would be more useful.

My family told me some sort of van with ladders on it (they didn't know if it was TWC) came a day or two ago and some guy did some work at that pole.

Is this some new weird cable thing? Something telephone or DSL-related? I also really don't like how the wires are in such a jumble, sticking out everywhere, looks kind of unsafe... especially with all the trees and bushes we have around here.

Note that I'm talking about the long box on the bottom, the one on top is clearly the cable junction box, or whatever they call it.

It is a little hard to see but I'll hazard a guess...

Fiber optic distribution?

I stopped off in Franksville (?) on the way home from MKE from work and saw this very thing, too.
It had some wires that were still on the ground from the poles (in the beginning), like it was some new cable system being installed.
Then these were attached what I cannot figure out, either.

Its seemed very odd, as I could not make anything out about the source (which company it was).:(

I can't tell from the pics but I'm imagining it's ATT upgrading to fiber distribution.  They are already having probs in Milwaukee with the pedestals they wanted to put all over the place...Milwaukee is stopping them because the boxes are so big they are a vision hazard for traffic.

That looks exactly like the copper phone junction boxes on our pole.

As far as messy, that is clean compared to ours. I'll have to snap a picture sometime, but there are dozens of old phone wires dangling down and cut about 10' from the ground just swaying in the breeze. I've called numerous times to complain but it apparently safe and tidy are not part of AT&T's core values.

It was worse when we moved in. There were 30' lines just lying on the ground from where they were cut from houses. Some were even half buried they had been there so long. I ended up cutting all the scrub wires off to the point they are at now. My neighbor's house still has 5 phone lines from the pole to the house and only one phone.

Guess that is what happens in the old part of town :(
