Why?  What am I missing with Dish, that Direct has?

FiberOptic

With DISH do you receive the local channels in HD?

Not for Milwaukee. They claim they'll be added soon, though.

FiberOptic

so dumb question, how do you get the HD feed?

Mark Strube

Off-the-air with an antenna. The Dish HD receivers have seperate inputs for antennas, and those channels show up just like any other channel in the guide.

Quote from: Mark Strube;35756Considering DirecTV kills the quality of their high definition content more than Dish, and that there's a lot less of the content at this point, I don't see how it's "alot better."

LOL....Look at the big picture. If you don't you are lost.

I prefer to look at my Dish HD lineup : 29 and counting + locals from Milwaukee and Chicago.:guitar:

I had dish for 3 months and got rid of it. I kept directv while trying dish. All I can say is yes they do have more hd. But it is very repetitive. I only liked a few of the channels, like Monsters, but got sick of it after a couple of months. What directv offers now is fine. Those are the channels I watch most in hd anyway.

Please explain,  I guess I'm lost cause I cant figure out what the big picture is.  And as far as Direct is concerned, they have over promised and under delivered for like 2 years now.  If they do ever get better, the best part about Dish is there is no contract, so I could switch if I want.

What the big picture is directv will be expanding their lineup by the end of next year. I would rather wait for good content. Not recycled. By then many more national cable and new channels will be offered in Hd. The picture should improve with the new satellites and mpeg 4. Allowing crisper pictures! I would rather wait to have it done right. Some of Dish hd is not full blown either.

Ok, I understand all of that, but I have owned a HDTV for like 2 or 3 years, and Direct has been saying that for 2 years now.  I understand that Dish uses HDLITE or whatever it is, so it is not all true HD.  The picture still looks awesome! (the vip622 uses mpeg4)  Then you also say " the picture SHOULD improve".  I would rather get all the HD content I have now, and if Direct SHOULD improve, I will consider them then.

Mpeg 4 does nothing for crisper pictures, but it does save bandwidth.

Not to mention the fact that right now, Dish has higher quality HD than DirecTV. None of DirecTV's HD goes above 1280x1080, while most of Dish's is at full 1920x1080 with a few exceptions, and the VOOM channels which are at 1280.

Actually, that's not true yet.

While the 622 is capable of decoding MPEG4, Dish has actually pulled a fast one on their customers.  The channels being "transmitted" in MPEG4 are actually coded as MPEG2, but the headers have been changed to tell the receiver that it's MPEG4.

Why?  So they can tell customers that to get some of the new HD channels, they will have to upgrade (even though they could still get the channels if the headers were not altered).

There are also questions as to the actual bandwidth savings they'll get from switching to MPEG4.  Early testing seems to show that the estimated savings were too high.

There's been quite a discussion about this on the AVS Forum:

Dish Mpeg4 to actually be Mpeg2, read inside!!

Both DirecTV and Dish are doing some very questionable things regarding HD right now.

I give up. If you think Dish is the future you really are blind. Do some research.

Dish's 29 and counting. All junk.

The VOOM stuff is garbage and most people who get the those channels and do not even watch them.

If you do your home wrok you will see that by the end of next year DTV will be the KING of HD.
