I called TW to get another 8300 box and hd dvr service. Now I understand about paying the fee to rent the box, but they said even though I am already paying the 8.95 or whatever for HD DVR service on box 1, I would have to pay rental charges and an additional dvr service fee for the 2nd box? does that sound right?

Yes unfortunately they charge a rental charge for each digital box, and a DVR fee for each individual DVR....SOL.

do I still get an 8300 box if I want HD but don't want to pay for the DVR service? Or do they have a different box then?

I went to do the same thing about a month back.  They told me the same thing - so I told them to go fly a kite.  I did not want to pay that much for my TV in my bedroom to have HD and DVR - so for now it is just hooked up to standard cable (it is a 27 inch CRT EDTV).  We don't watch it that much, but if I was able to get it for the $7 or whatever a month I would have been fine with that - but $15/month was just too much for me.

And I have no idea why they need to charge you for the "service" again...  That is just stupid.

You'll get a different box...I have the 8300 in the Family room and in bedroom I didn't want to pay the extra for DVR service so they gave me the SA3250.
