Ala carte is the way to go. With all these hundreds of channels which most of us only watch a few, it makes no sense to force us to pay for a lot of garbage that we don't even watch. I know the state of Wisconsin was trying or are still trying to push the cable companies towards more of a ala carte style programming.
I would love to be able to pick my favorite 50 channels and dump the rest of the junk on TV.

It must be remembered that of any program group the most expensive  program
category, is the sports channels and may represent a greater expense to the consumer then all the of the other 50 or so channels put together. And again may I point out that the so called "SHOPPING CHANNELS" are offered to the  providers at no cost. It seems like that the NFL channels   programming, consists mostly of repeats of past  Football games, and talk shows. I believe  the only way to solve this Dilemma is to poll the subscribers with the question "Would you be willing to pay an extra 75 cents a month, to receive the NFL channel as part of your basic cable line-up?". I would be willing to abide by the will of the majority.

IMO, it won't lower overall bills much.  However ala-carte may weed out many of the useless channels (as determined by the take rates of each service).
No company... in any line of business... will setup (or in this case, change to) a business model that cuts revenue by the margins some here would expect.

As one can expect the NFL channel, would never agree to go ala-carte.

Of course they wouldn't and the owners of the NFL Network would of course want to add all thier extra channels to pump up their revenues, but again, those "extra" channels only tie up the bandwidth of the stuff that is really worth watching.
Bandwidth issues will be huge in the coming years at cable and satellite companies.
