I was looking for a second HD set the other day to replace a tube TV in my office.  I came across this one.  42", flatpannel LCD, and 1080p!!! Delivered for $1800.  Looks like a pretty good deal and has gotten a lot of good reviews.  They are now out of stuck but if you are looking and can wait until Sept 1, then this might be worth looking at.

Well I broke down and got one of these puppies. Sadly, the box was damaged and the delivery guy opened it up and noticed a SMALL chip off the paint. Ill keep you in suspence and show give the link to the picture of the damage at the end of this post. I called crutchfield and they told me that they were presently sold out so I would have to wait for a replacement. The lady was very nice and stated that I could keep the TV for 30 days, use it, and see if problems develop. In the mean time, she said that she would refund me $260. That way if I keep it, I would get it for $1540 which is their "scratch and dent" price. Considering that its an LCD panel (no moving parts to get dislodged), I decided to give it a shot.

The picture is beautiful. I saw no defects what-so-ever with the screen. One of the only complaints was the lack of controls to adjust the picture so my first step was to pop in a calibration CD. Surprisingly, it was nearly dead-on calibrated right out of the box. I used to calibrate TVs for a local retailer and have excellent vision (can see at 20 ft what most people see at 15 ft, not sure if thats 20/15 or 15/20). Anyway, I even pulled out my blue glasses and the color seemed right on too. The only thing that was a little off wa the brigtness. It was too bright so I first turned the back light all he way down then tweaked moved the brightness over a few steps and it was perfect. I have tried some 720p and 1080i sources and they both look great. Sadly, I have nothing to test the 1080p input. The sound is as full as I would expect from TV speakers. Though I did turn the base down before I tested it because I have tenants upstairs and do not want to bother them. This is not where I will watch movies (thats what my projector and 7.1 setup is for), I am just looking for "adequate" sound. This is in my office where I tend to watch the most TV, so I do not want poor sound but also do not have high requiremens. The sound more than meets my needs but does not stand out like those bose systems where they fake surround sound. But definately better than the 6 yr old 32 inch sony trinitron that it replaced.

Now, the moment you have all been waiting for... how F-ed up was the TV? Well check it out for yourself. I had to circle it because it sort of blended in with the glare from my light. Aparently this is worth $260.

I've got the 32" version with DVD player coming for the bedroom.  Should be here on Monday/Tuesday.  $999.00, not a bad price at all.  Did some research and the panels are made at one of the plants that make the Sharp panels.  That makes me happy and saves me a lot of money.  Also ordered a VESA wall mount, gotta do this right.  Just got sick of trying to read the guide on the old 19" set in the room.
