I saw a clip on C-Net of an interview with a Samsung spokesman stating that a Blue-Ray player will upconvert your old dvd's to 1080(P?).

This got me to thinking about upconverting SD sources. How can a low-rez source really be made into high-rez? Has anyone ever done a comparison? Is there any/much improvement?

I ask because  few years ago when Samsung first announced an upconverting dvd player a friend of mine boought one and returned it saying he couldn't see any improvement over a progressive scan player.

I have one of those Samsung upconvert DVD players as well.  When connected via Monster Cable DVI there is no visual difference compared to the Monster Cable component.

It can not be made into HD, it is just scaled to HD. It does look better since the  scaling is done digitally. But it is not true HD DVD or Blu-ray.

I have Zenith318 which upconvert component to HD (software downgrade required for newer units). It does look much better then the regular progressive scan output on 106" screen. :)
