Just found out that AT&T offers 3.0 mbps DSL for our new place up in Jackson. Anyone have any experience with that? Are you really getting 3.0? Is it reliable?

I've tried to contact the Wireless provider up there twice, and left messages, but they haven't returned my calls or emails.. and if they're that bad while I'm considering becoming a customer, how bad will it be when I already AM a customer and need support? :o

Have you considered the Canopy system from //www.netwurx.net ?

I've installed it for two friends. Very nice, especially for a guy that uses the Internet al little. :D

I have it -- Yes to both questions.

As far as reliability, the only issue I was was a few months ago during an upgrade and that affected the entire midwest area.

Actually, that's when I got the 3.0 Mbps service -- Calling for the credit of my slower speed DSL during the outage. One annoying support issue is that they have a voice-based phone menu system. You had to go through that whole proccess before getting the recording that it was down in this area.

I checked DSLreports.com at work to confirm and that's where I saw the extent of the problem.

Otherwise, I haven't had any other issues. It's a good idea to always call for a credit during any outage. Also, when the contract runs out, you can typically call and keep the same pricing rate.

Just as good.........paying $17.00 a month

I'm only getting 2.25MB down.  I was getting 1.2MB down on the cheapest plan.  For $27.99/month you COULD try the next package up, giving you 3.0 - 6.0MB down, and 384 - 688kb/s up.

We called to ask about it, and they quoted us $44 per month total for phone and 3.0 DSL.

The Netwurx thing sounds interesting. I see there's a hardware fee upfront. How would you set up your own wireless network in your house with them?

Just as you would with any other provider.

Connect your wireless router to the Netwurx antenna and away you go !

I thought Jackson had their own wi-fi?

I live in Waukesha, so I can't guarantee my info to be correct, but I think you might also be able to check with Nconnect.net for service in Jackson.  They are based out of Slinger.  I grew up in Slinger, and my parents still live there.  They've had dial-up service through Nconnect for a long time, and when they introduced the wireless service, they offered dial-up customers first stab at it for a reduced price.  From looking at the websites for both Nconnect and Netwurx, the prices look to be about the same.  I also think they're using the same equipment (Motorola), and they may even be leasing the same towers to broadcast for all I know.

If you can get the same service from either vendor for about the same price, I wonder what would happen if you call one up saying so-and-so recommended their service, but the other is the same price...why should I go with YOUR service.  You never know, maybe they work out deals to try and get the service.  Depends on how much you want to save a few bucks, but it might be worth a try.

If anything, I just wanted to let you know that Nconnect was likely another possibility.

Netwurx max speed is 3.5mbps and is affected by distance, I have it installed in Ft. Atkinson, DSL is not available because of distance limits.  Line of site is required.  At 3 miles from their AP, download speed is 1mbps.  Upload speed is less, Netwurx indicates it's a Canopy software problem.  Having both, I prefer DSL over broadband wi-fi, less latency.

Last year Netwurx back-hauled everything to Hartford, and there were several  weather related outages (lightning strikes), since then Netwurx has added redundancy to the network, improving its reliability.

If both are available, choose which ever is priced right and fits your needs.

I'm not sure why yours would be slower,  I know the 900mgz paddles are slower than the 2.4ghz's, or maybe the time of day that you checked it.  Normally when I have a good conection, usaully during the winter months is best when all the leaves are off the trees.  I get 4.5mb down and 1.2 to 1.5mb up.  I also have a dish on mine.  I am at 3.82 air miles from the big HWY 60 tower.

ATT was just in my subdivision not to long ago burying new cable not only to upgrade our service but also to service the new subdivision going up behind me.  I spoke to the foreman from WASS cable and boring to find out what ATT was up to and he told me what  I mentioned above as far as upgrades and service.   Also that we would finally have DSL avialable in our subdivsion.

This is for Tom.  Netwurx is usually very helpfull.  That is who I have.  But I also have a major tree problem.  If Nconnect would put up 900mgz AP's on that tower, then their would not be a problem.  Nconnect owns most of the equipment in my area and Netwurx and Nconnect have a working agreement as far as bandwidth and services provided.  I got the wireless for $19.95 per month, but I had to buy the equipment.  About a $400.00 dollar investment including the dish and cable.  You can PM me to let me know just where your at in Jackson.  But I can tell you now that the only tower serving the Jackson area is the big HWY 60 tower east of 41.  So if you can see that tower from your house then your in, otherwise forget it.  If your north and east of the village then you might have a shot at the Rosco road tower.  But you would have to be able to see clear of the hill at the intersection of Pleasant Valley and Jackson dr..    Also If you would want wireless, I would make you a good deal on my equipment as soon as I get hooked up to DSL.  I am considering getting the Elite package, which is 3 to 6meg down and 1.5 to 3meg up for $28.00 per month

As soon as ATT comes in and sets up all the equipment and does the final hookup I am dropping Netwurx and going DSL, mostly because I have a tree problen I can no longer or I should say I am unwilling to do anything about anymore. :bang:

They do...  At $39.95 per month.  You can get it cheaper if your willing to host a repeater on your house, provided that they need one in your vicinity that is.  The speed is about 1 to 1.5meg down. :)

The wireless in your own home would be your responsibility.  The Canopy SM's and AP's have their own protocols and encyption schemes and are also point to point between SM and AP's.  It would be like WiFi trying to talk to BlueTooth.  What you can do is to get yourself a cheap wireless 4 port internet router and connect the SM to the WAN port of that.  I have mine connected to a wired router and then on my wired network I have a wireless router connected and configured as an AP for my laptop computer to connect with.  But if you want to have strictly a wireless network, then all you need is a wireless internet router and connect the Canopy SM to that.

If I go DSL, does it use the regular phone Jack, or does the phone company have to bring in a diffrent type of wire?

It actually piggy backs on the normal phone line with voice.  They provide filters for all your phones to remove the high freq. white noise.
