Decided to start a new thread for this, the last one got rather lengthy and split off to a couple of additional topics...

After Jim Hall's generous offer to call and discuss my situation with him I was able to talk to him on New Years Eve (actually due more to his efforts in returning my call multiple times).

In general I think we verified my setup was pretty much complete/correct, though we did come up with a couple of variations of things to try.

I removed the one splitter I had in line on the way to the hdtv card and tried some variations with the inline amplifier (came with antennae) and an adjustable gain amplifier I had for other purposes.

there are two strange things that happened during my experimenting (see below) but low and behold after some drastic direction adjustments I was able to get a signal that was just barely strong enough to allow the tuner to show the picture although the sound would drop out intermittently so I assume I am right on the edge.

here's the strange/interesting stuff...

first, my antennae is pointing in exactly the opposite direction I thought it should be (appears to be directly north to me but I've yet to find my compass to check it closer).  Makes me wonder though, should a Terk-55 orient parallel or perpedicular to the signal?

the 2nd strange thing...with a 20 signal strength I got picture and sound but with another variation and a 50 signal strength I got not picture and no sound!

that makes no sense to me, unless the stronger signal is also ghosting (twice the picture, twice the signal? I have no idea if this makes any sense at all)

the only difference between the two scenarios was that the 20 signal strength scenario did not have the adjustable gain amplifier inserted before the tuner and the 40 signal strength scenario did.

Mr. Hall has offered to continue to explore the problem/solution with me, hopefully even to bring a technician and truck out to look over my setup, the area (obstacles etc) and take some measurements if necessary.

I will keep you posted
