Jimboy

I watched Smallville & Supernatural last night using my DD receiver and didn't notice any problems.

Hey Jimboy, any chance you might have a full season of Superstar USA from a few years ago?  I loved that show like crazy and I thought there was supposed to be another season, but I have yet to hear anything.

I barely remember that show. I recall that it was the direct opposite of American Idol.
You might want to contact The WB but they might not remember it either.  ;)

Generic e-mail for Da WB is... faces@thewb.com
I'll see if I can find anything more specific on Monday.

At this point I'm pretty sure the audio on HD content needs approx 100ms delay added.

EDIT: Correction... that's -100ms of delay, since the video is ahead of the audio.

EDIT 2: I've been doing a lot of testing, with captures of Smallville and Pepper Dennis... -160ms seems to be just about spot-on.

So just to be clear on this........

Do you see video happen first - then audio?  See door slam then hear it.
or
Do you hear the audio - then see the video result?

I watched Smallville last Thursday night and I didn't see any problems with it. I also recorded it on my HTPC in HD and didn't see any issues with it.

Are you seeing this problem on your LCD set and on the PC?
I know that some LCD sets have a bit of a lag in producing the video on the screen but I wouldn't think the newer sets would still have this problem.

I watch using a USDTV tuner connected to a 27" analog tv with the tuners optical output connected to a 5.1 surround system.  My PC uses an ATI HDTV card with Beyond TV 4 software for recording.

Before I go messing around - Does anyone else see this problem?

Mark Strube

Right... video happens, then audio. I notice the issue on BOTH of our HD sets. On the SXRD using the built-in tuner, and on the older LCD using a VOOM tuner. On the SXRD, when I pass the audio thru my receiver instead of using the TV speakers, the delay is a bit more noticeable, but it's still very noticeable when I'm using the built-in sound. It's most jarring when I first tune to the station... I get used to sound being spot-on, and then I switch to an HD program on 18-1, and it's off. Once I watch it for 5-10 minutes it becomes slightly less noticeable, just because my brain is getting used to the delay.

I'm also able to easily notice the problem on my PC, which is where I was able to come up with the audio delay setting that corrected the problem.

Also, last night, as soon as King Of Queens started after Pepper Dennis... there were absolutely no delay issues.

But yeah, it's video, then audio, which is why I corrected myself saying a negative delay must be introduced... -160ms (the audio must come in 160 milliseconds sooner).

Are you getting all of your signals through TWC?

I haven't been able to notice this using OTA.

We are not on cable (in HD) so it would have to be OTA.

And why not????????

LOL... Haven't we been over this? Sinclair and TWC aren't able to reach a contract agreement.

Mark Strube

If you're not noticing the delay problems very much, try switching between the analog 18 and 18-1... at that point it becomes quite apparent.

I watched carefully last night, and I noticed the delay.  It's not a big one, but it is there.

Duh!  Of course there is no TWC WB-HD option.

I was shifting the delay adjustments last night a little.  If you didn't see a problem before you would have last night.  Settings went back to normal at 9:05pm.

Tonight I'm testing the settings in the other direction from its normal setting. So again if you didn't see a problem before you might see it tonight.  Just testing.
