So, I connect my 8300HD set top box to my Sony KF-42WE610 using a HDMI cable and VOILA! - No Audio, just Video. Audio and Video just fine using my Component Cables.

Newsgroup threads indicate I should change 'Audio Output' settings on the 8300HD to HDMI, but my 8300 box has no 'Audio Output' under 'A' - more settings! It just has a setting to change the audio level (for listening and recording).

I change my settop box (getting another one from the TW Payment Center) and I have changed my cable (I'm desperate!) - no luck!

Somebody please please help me!

Well for awhile, TWC was forcing 5.1 audio on the box.. either TVs can't accept 5.1 or HDMI can't output 5.1 (I don't know which is true because people say both) so that's why you can't hear anything.  A few of us have gotten the audio menu where you can choose HDMI audio instead of Dolby Digital... I don't know if it was just a test run in certain areas or not, but I saw it in the beginning of December back when I still had the box.

Does anybody have the settings on their 8300HD box to change Audio output to HDMI? Is the darn thing hidden or something because I can't see it

Why can't it be a simple as it's supposed to be?

If you specifically ask for a new, unused box... it should have those options. I did that a few weeks ago and I got a box with those options.

I'm assuming you're using the analog audio out (red & white connectors)?

TW did hand me a new box, but I don't see the option to change Audio out to HDMI. I have reverted back to Component cables for now; even attempted to use the analog cables with HDMI, but with no luck. I have a TW tech coming out on Sunday, but I fear he'll have no clue and just waste my time! HELP ME PLEASE. This is so frustrating!

Maybe its the box with firewire.. because my old box didn't have it.. the 2nd one that had the audio menu did.  Does yours have firewire ports on the back?

The digital audio option in the settings section should be available in about two weeks.  Meanwhile, I'd hold on to the 8300 you have.

My box has an Audio Digital Out on the More Settings Menu, and I have it set to HDMI and it works fine!! I really think the picture looks better with the component cables. The difference I'm seeing is this...
1-It sounds better and....
2-The SD channels look better..

Using the HDMI and keeping the whole thing all digital is not clear cut. I think the TW box has some kind of wierd circuitry that makes component look better..
Just my 2 cents worth!!!

Your HDTV could need completely different picture settings for the HDMI input... which is why Component may look better to you.

RESOLVED!! YOOOHOOOO! It was the box. The TW tech came in today, replaced the box and there it was - Digital Audio setting! Changed to HDMI  and - All's Well with the HD Universe! Fabuloso!

Ya.. not the box.  The code.  If you waited 2 weeks, you would have had the same thing.  Now you have code with a bug that defaults to 2-channel audio even when digital is selected in "setttings-more settings", which is guess is how you are using it in the first place... so its no big deal for you now.

Mark Strube

Will that bug in the newer boxes be resolved in the upcoming update? Know of any other corrections or additions the new code will add? :)

1- I don't know for sure.
2- No

Sorry... in my position I lose track of all the changes/fixes/new bugs for the 30 or so versions of set tops deployed.  I'm sure this tech-savvy group may be able to find a bug, even if it is unknown at launch.  :D

Heh I could tell you a bug right now actually... this is with the newer 8300HD. I had a first-run only series recording set for "Free Ride" from 506. I went to play a recording from a few weeks ago, and everytime I tried, instead of playing the show, it went to the buffered "live" version of whatever channel I happened to have the box on. I tried rebooting, same problem... it's as if the recording wasn't actually there, but none of the times were in yellow (which would mean an incomplete recording).

This is the first time that happened, and I haven't encountered it since.
