I know this is nit-picky. That's why it's in "off topic," but I have to ask:

Why do so many people use "D*" for DirecTV ?

I know the history ... EchoStar was abbreviated to E*. I get that.

It gives the feel, at least to me, that there's something illicit about typing 'DirecTV.'

It's not hard to type DirecTV. What gives ?

... oh, and a sub-pet peeve. There aren't two T's in DirecTV (Direct TV) for those that do bother to make the attempt.

Flame suit on. Guess I'm a little ornery after having to deal with AT&T all week.

It's because the original's were EchoStar, PrimeStar, and DirecTV.  Since the first two got abreviated to P* and E*, very quickly Dtv got called D* too.  It's not accurate anymore, but it has stuck.  There was this same discussion 10 years ago when it happened and Dtv lost out to those who liked the abreviations.   :p

Ok, I forgot about PrimeStar. My bad.

StarvingForHDTV

I can't stand it either.

And also DirecTV should not be called Dtv because as we all know DTV stands for Digitial TeleVision.

The world has gone acronym mad or should that be twhgam

Personally I like to write in English and when I see emails or forum messages ladened with acronyms it drives me mad and half the time I can not understand them.

It always take me half a second to try and recall if D* stands for Directv or Dish.  I hate that.

No. I liked my V* or Voom. It doesn't matter for me. Nobody is even close to Voom HD offerings right now. It is sad :(

Aren't we just getting a little picky.

So - should I refer to Dish Network as D*?

PS: My monthly bill states "Dish Network" - NOT "Echostar".

No, if you don't want to confuse somebode else.
D* = DirecTV,
E* = Echostar = parent of Dish Network.

Wasn't there an Alpha Star (A*) way back when too?
