I'm wondering if I would be able to recieve any ota signals up in Sheboygan. I have heard mixed opinions on the subject. Also should I get a unit that can do direct tv hd and ota tuner? or is a separate component for each one better?

We have some members in the Sheboygan area and they are getting results from the stations running moderate or high power.  So you should be able to get the digital versions of these stations:  4, 10, 12, and 36.  18 and 24 are questionable as is 58.  Channel 6 of course can't even be received in Milwaukee.

He would need a larger outdoor antenna and Radio Shack has the 30 db power amp in which the amp is installed right at the antenna and of course the amp is made for outdoors.  Run your coax into the house and before you split it to the TVs or if a single run up to the TV is where you have the power supply for the amp.  That should be strong enuff to pull in all the Milwaukee channels except ch. 6.  Put a rotor on it and you should be able to receive Green Bay DTVs as well.

I live in Muskego, I have it set that way except I don't have a large antenna, just a medium size one that needs to be replaced.  I will wait till spring. I get all the Milwaukee channels except ch. 6, but get chs 5 and 32 DTV from Chicago as well.

If you go to Antenna Web ( http://www.antennaweb.org/ ), you'll see that, with the right antenna you can pick up a boatload of stations...

I think all of the DirecTV HD units have built in OTA tuners.  I doubt if it would be worth buying a separate OTA tuner, unless the DirecTV HD STB you buy has a really bad tuner.  Probably would only happen if you bought an old one.

I have the Direct box with the OTA DTV/HD tuner built in. It works great. I have been very happy with it.

I am also a fan of Channelmaster antennas. I suggest going with a UHF only antenna as most DTV OTA signals are in the UHF band (except for channel 10-DT which is actually channel 8).

Although with Milwaukee Public TV now showing all their HDTV stuff on Channel 36d (35), and Channel 10's digital channel being used only to split their signal into a million SD multicasts so you can literally tune into Teletubbies 24/7, not being able to pick up 10d (8), probably no big loss...

Unless you're a Teletubbies fan. ;)

I hope i'm not the only one who is amazed how we are basically stepping back in time to put up an antenna on our house again. I was glad our new house didnt have one, now I might have to get one again. Before buying the equipment to get local channels, is their any chance that Direct TV will carry local channels in HD? Or has anyone been bugging charter to know when they'll have hd service at all?

Tom Snyder

It will be awhile before DirecTV can do local HD... if ever. Satellite bandwidth requirements are massive.  Apparently a new satellite and spot-beam technology may provide a solution, but I don't know if I'd hold my breath waiting.

Charter Sucks... Need i say more.
Last spring they left a message on my machine that i should watch my mail because they were going to be mailing out flyers about upcoming hd in Sheboygan. I have talked to other people about this situation as well. Im not the only one who got one of those calls. Since then nothing.... I have called them and they know nothing about the message. They also give mixed answers on when hd will be available. Some say oh soon it will be here, others have no clue.
I went to herzog tv in sheboygan falls. They hooked me up with a Wineguard antenna. Its the big ol VHF/UHF antenna. HD is broadcast on UHF so after some other research i could have just picked up the channel master UHF antenna. That would have saved me the trouble of mounting that big thing.

For those of you who are interested I have a Winegard antenna that was cut for channels 7-69  Boom length about 60" and width of the antenna is around 30"

Its range is around 60 miles give or take (depends on terrian etc.) but is a nice compact antenna strickly for digital channels.

Have put around 30 of these antennas up in the sheboygan county area with great success (primarily with dish HD installs)  Can usually get all milwaukee and Green Bay digitals.

This is funny... I saw this thread, and saw myself warning that D* HD locals weren't going to happen any time soon... I saw the date on the post, and realized it was over two years ago.. and they'll finally be happening here this summer... 2 1/2 years later. Glad I DIDN'T hold my breath!  :)

In Sheboygan, I'm able to receive several channels using an indoor antenna (Terk TV5):

4-1
6-1 (surprise!)
11-1
12-1
24-1
36-1
55-1
55-2
55-3
55-4
58-1
58-2

Granted, I've located the antenna on the second floor, and near a window, but it's a pleasant surprise...and no need to pay extra to receive those channels.

I'm curious to know how consistent it will be once the vegetation comes out this spring and with sporadic E with temp inversions.

Keep us up to date if you could please on what channels are the most consistent also.

Thanks

Brad
