WGN HDTV Basketball
Mon. 01/02/06  vs. Milwaukee  7:30pm WGN - HDTV

Anyone able to receive this game via OTA, I only can get WGN in the summer.  It would be nice to see HDTV Bucks before the playoffs.

I have to give credit to WGN.  Its probably the ONLY TV station in USA that spent the most money to provide local sports on HD.  Not sure about the White Sox, but the Cubs games are also broadcast in HD during the summer.  It requires a lot of equipment from cameras, tape decks, studio consoles, etc. all capable of HD.  You don't find most stations today purchasing any tape decks, etc. to provide syndicated or locally produced programs in HD yet.  So far most have replaced their Network receiver modules to receive Network programs in HD.

The only station in the Milwaukee area with HD tape decks providing programs on tape as well as satellite is WMVT-DT, ch. 36-1.

Yes, all home Cubs, White Sox & Bulls games are in HD on WGN (& Comcast Sportsnet).  Some games are alos OTA on CH 26, WCIU.  As of yet, those home games have not been in HD, but rumors are that they will be this year.  As of yet, no road HD games.  WE'll likely see those on Comcast Sportsnet 1st through agreements with other RSN that are broadcasting their home feed in HD.  Need to get sharing agreements.  Since Boll Wirtz does not allow home television, Hawks fans will likely never see HD!

Just curious is there a reason or something specific needed for TWC to carry the HD signal of WGN,  we only get the games in SD

I'd bet they'd need rights granted by ch 18 in Milwaukee since they should be considered the primary WB station for Kenosha & ch 9 would be secondary.  Ch 9's digital OTA signal is very strong though, In Waukegan I have my antenna pointed toward Milwaukee & It still gets an 80% signal strength.  Even with an indoor antenna & set box, it should come in.

TimeWarner Cable does not carry WGN-TV ch. 9. They carry only the Cable-Satellite version of WGN.  The programming between them are not always what is actually on ch. 9 Chicago.  For instance rather than airing what ch. 9 airs weekdays at 7:00 pm which happens to be WB Network programming which is the samething as WVTV, ch. 18, but instead the cable-Satellite version carries either a movie or whatever else, but NOT WB.   Throughout the day WGN-TV, ch. 9 and WGN Cable-Satellite switch...meaning sometimes they will simulcast each other sometimes they don't.

As for WGN to be received in HD over cable, that all depends if their cable-satellite version is capable of doing that.  We know for sure WGN-TV, ch. 9 can do HD OTA over ch. 19.  I have received WGN-DT on ch. 19 and have seen some programs in HD, either it was sports or WB Network programming.

TW does carry the satellite version of WGN in the Milwaukee metro areas, including Muskego.  In the southern part of the region (Racine and Kenosha), TW does carry the off air version from Chicago on channel 9.

If more people called or wrote to request WGN HD, it might just make it on the cable system in Kenosha someday.

Even if (and of course I doubt it very much) TWC had WGN HD that Bucks game will be blacked out anyway. NBA rules are very rude.
But thanks for your tip, will be watching WGN HD OTA here in Muskego :)
I get pretty stable signal here with ChanellMaster 4228 in the attic. Only have some breakups during the day time. But for the most evenings and mornings it is OK. WFLD HD (Chicago FOX) is rock solid without any breaks.
As far as PQ WGN is one of the best OTA stations. Our ch 18 is very close.
The biggest difference is between WLS (Chicago's ABC) and WISN (Miwaukee's ABC). SD PQ are like day and night. WISN SD is just unwatchable. BTW WLS already has GMA show in HD. WISN probably has nobody in the studio in the mornings to turn the switch. :D

OK, here's my situation in Kenosha.  I don't have an HDTV yet, but we'll be getting one in about a month.  I'm from Chicago, and my fiancee is from Milwaukee, so we picked Kenosha as about the only place we could live and keep our jobs.  :)   My situation is a bit different than some I would guess, in that my apartment/condo complex includes free standard (non Digital) TWC cable feed and I've used this for the past year.    We get all of the Chicago network stations and Comcast Sportsnet Chicago in addition to all of the Milwaukee stations.  Being a huge Chicago sports/Bears fan, this was a "must" for me.  :)

Obviously being in an apartment, I can't use an exterior or attic antenna...  I doubt rabbit ears would do the trick being 50 miles from DT Chicago, and 30 from Milwaukee.    Does the TWC digital cable in Kenosha carry all of the stations from both cities like my analog feed?   I looked at the TWC HD package, and all of the broadcast HD stations were the Milwaukee stations, without mention of the Chicago stations.   Would I be able to get the Chicago stations' HD feeds?  Even with Analog cable, the Milwaukee stations' quality seem "dull" in comparison to the Chicago stations (kind of like mono sound, picture not as bright/sharp, etc).  Maybe I'm just used to "big market" production vs. "small market" production quality.  No offense....   :D

Any other TWC subscribers in the Kenosha area, I'd really appreciate any info you may be able to shed on this...  I don't want to go the DirectTV route because the local DTV channels are the Milwaukee stations...   :bang:   I suppose I could USE DTV for all of the digital/HD programming, and use a splitter or something and still get the Chicago stations via the standard analog cable, but that still wouldn't get me the Chicago HD feeds...    :(

Thanks!
John

TWC delivers only Milwaukee digital stations.
If you work in Chicago you can setup DTV or Dish Network (they will provide Chicago HDTV form Feb. 1) using your work address.
Also if you have a window looking south, you can setup antenna at the window and get all Chicago HD signals.
