Time Warner CSR said no over the phone.  Their website lists "self-install" as a feature of the mall stores.  So I was wondering - if I go to the Mayfair store, can I pick up a cablecard and install it myself?  Has anyone actually done this with Time Warner?

After all, these things were designed to be installed by the consumer.   Does anyone know?

They are not currently a self-install item.  Once a card is installed, the television will display several code numbers, which then must be entered into a TW computer to activate the device.  Because of the complexity of the activation, the tech visit is currently required.

I don't think the store or payment offices stock the cards, but others may have a more definitive answer on this.

That doesn't so complex. An online activation through your TW account or a phone system would be child's play to create and use.

Oh, wait. That would require someone in TW Management using logic :bang:

So if they allowed someone to self-install, they might have to CALL with certain CODE NUMBERS for a CSR to enter? Scary! I don't see how we can handle all that!!

If the TV manufacturers would load decent firmware, it could become a do-it-yourself job in the future.  Until then, bugs are being discovered nearly every week.  IMO, right now it's best to send a tech out on the first attempt, rather than go into a situation where the customer has already been frustrated, followed by a service call that ends up in more disdain for the technology.

I've had TWC phone support people tell me I could switch it out between TV's myself and ive had other support people tell me they need to send a "tech".

The CableCARD will NOT work at all with Toshibas.

Sony TV's are the only ones, in my experience, that are truly a plug and play install.

"Activation" involves the "tech" reading a number that is displayed on the TV screen automatically when the card is inserted.

The installation was a much more involved process at my house than I thought it would be.  New amp, new 1x8 splitter, new ends on all the cables, and a new cable to my TV.  The actual cablecard portion of the install took a whole 5 minutes on the TV and another 10-15 minutes for the tech to get through to the TWC office to get the card authorized to receive programming.  After that, I got all the channels I'm supposed to with no problems.
